If this problem has been brought up before, I'm sorry for not finding it on the forums.
I just switched over from HCMD2 to NRW on my 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo on my Mac running OS 10.6.2. I know the units are supposed to terminate after 7 hours, but some of mine fail to do so. They run for up to 8 hours at times (I took a screen grab of two recently completed WUs, if anyone wants to take a look) but always report at 7-7.02. I'm losing credit on this deal, I've watched my credit average graph fall quite a bit and I'm also wondering if the last bit of work (after the 7 hour point) is getting returned anyway. The only thing that I can think of is that when I run complected programs, the program slows down (I know it does this, I watched it happen with HCMD2) but my system 'knows' when it should end and keeps running until it hits that point in calculations. Oh and I'm running BOINC 6.10.17 |

The same here - but I have a "much wider" time span of 7:00 to 7:04
---------------------------------------- When I made the observation, I didn't think much about it, thought it might be coincidence where a couple of WUs have exactly the same size. But now it looks different. Some explanation would be nice. Sekerob? Uplinger? Regards, Martin ![]() |

@themerrill
----------------------------------------BOINC Manager version 6.10.17 shows elapsed (aka wallclock) time, therefore what you see there is the CPU time (as in the older versions) plus the time that BOINC left you o do whatever you need to run in your computer. To see the true CPU time for a task you have to select it and click the Properties button. @martin64 NRW WUs stop at the end of the computation currently running when passing the 7-hour CPU time limit. Cheers. Jean. |

I experiened the same if I run NRW + many freeHAL tasks (25 tasks) at the same time.
Because of all those freeHAL tasks NRW needs 8 hours time to finish (that is shown in the BOINC Manager), although it only used 7 hours of CPU time (that is shown on the status page after returning the WU). |

Trying to find answers can be difficult "as there probably is nothing new under the sun", there has to be abetter way to organize issues that cruncher have on a recurrent basis especially for new crunchers who have not followed the forums for any length of time. Perhaps if we set up a area for each project and the quirks it that particular project has. Perhaps aleardy done but I am not aware of it. Also a tutorial with beginers info, intermediate info and advanced info depending on level of experiance for each project (may be to much) but certainly would be benifitial for over all WCG. Just an idea to get it going. Probably should start on new thread but pertiant here.

Jean is correct, the work units stop around 7 CPU hours. I say about because it checks if it has passed the 7 hour time mark after a checkpoint. Which means if you checkpoint with 6:59 and each loop takes 5 minutes...then your work unit will end around 7:04...But what you are noticing with the time difference is probably due to running the 6.10.x client which shows wall clock time.

That was the problem, I took a look at the properties to see the CPU time and it lines up. Thanks for your help

Trying to find answers can be difficult ... Start with... the Start Here/FAQ forum index, and/or use the Forum Search function ... there has to be abetter way to organize issues that cruncher have on a recurrent basis especially for new crunchers who have not followed the forums for any length of time... Start with... the Start Here/FAQ forum index ... Perhaps if we set up a area for each project and the quirks it that particular project has. Start with... the Start Here/FAQ forum index ... Perhaps aleardy done but I am not aware of it. Yes, it's called the Start Here/FAQ forum ... Also a tutorial with beginers info, intermediate info and advanced info depending on level of experiance for each project (may be to much) but certainly would be benifitial for over all WCG. For beginners I would suggest a review of... the Start Here/FAQ forum index Probably should start on new thread but pertiant here. It could have been a good idea. Judson, I am not blaming you, I am simply catching this superb opportunity to remind everybody of this particular forum where most Frequently Asked Questions have an answer. Much time has been invested (mostly by Sekerob) to elaborate answers as complete as possible for a large variety of questions that participants who want to know more about WCG are wondering about one day or another. To make it easier it has been set as "global" by the staff, so it is shown top of every section of the forum. So, why not use it instead or re-inventing the wheel every day? Note: The index is so large now that using your browser's Find function might make it faster to find the topic(s) you are looking for. Cheers. Jean. |

[OT] what fun, just an hour ago changed Cobblestones and Credits computation principle topic to Benchmarks, Cobblestones and the Credit Computation principle in the FAQ index and also updated the Statistics & Backup topic a bit (still looks like a dog, crammed with information, for who's interested), but if seeking beginners, progressed, advanced guide, start typing and putting it into WCGwikia.
---------------------------------------- Searching is easy, use the boolean connectors AND and OR if looking for multiple words in a single post and use the supplemental filters. I've got "search upon typing" on in FFX :D For beginners, WCG build the Simple View onto BOINC, with an Advanced View button, bottom right [/OT]

Yes it is simiple if you are very familar with searching the web or information sources but most of are not computer experts or have the time to do and sort through such a search or become a computer expert. I am sure it sounds like , wow, don't they know how easy it is to search! Again, if it were for most of us the same questions would not be coming up again and again. Sure you could argue, well it is just laziness on my/their parts, but I argue if I understood what "search upon typing" on in FFX :D, a supplimental filters, and WCGwikia as well as Cobblestones and Credits computation priniciple topic to Benchmarks,Cobblestones and the Credit Computation principle..., etc meant it would be easy. But I admit my ignorance and am sure I am not alone. I am happy to learn. I believe the easier we make it, the more people would contribute to the projects and the forum without fear of sounding stupid and instead of persuing, just giving up! Just my humble thoughts.
