Same here I was hoping to scrape a Sapphire badge on this project but I think I may miss out by 10 days or so Will see how it goes and cache up if I can make it.Usually the projects last a little bit longer than predicted. So you should have a good chance... Good luck!!! ![]() |

And you can also get several days (10 on my version of boinc) worth of buffer at the end, if you're into tweaking as many work units as you can out of it.

Same here I was hoping to scrape a Sapphire badge on this project but I think I may miss out by 10 days or so Will see how it goes and cache up if I can make it.I was working toward the Sapphire badge for HPCC and CMD2, when I saw that NRW would be completing in April 2010 so I moved all my resources to that project so I wouldn't be cut off from completing at least 2 years for that project. With 2 Duo core systems and one quad core, I should not have any trouble reaching that goal. I don't know how to add specifics about points or time to my posts or I think I would do that. Martin, I think your analysis could well be more accurate for the projects that are closer to ending. Thanks, I will take that into account. As for the CMD2 project, your argument (in itself) sort of defeats itself. You did not take account of the fact that when the other projects end, people will move to this project and the throughput of work will suddenly rise! That said there could be 5 more projects added over the next year, and it could move out to 2015. You are quite right to raise the point about computer power (performance) rising. The general rule of transistor count per wafer area doubling every 2 years (Moores Law) has not gone away. As this effects processing performance/speed you are right to affirm that CPU Power will continue to rise. Over time this is fairly linear, but over small periods of time, months to years there can be jumps, and we are experiencing one now. This year both AMD and Intel have released a number of mainstream Quad core CPUs that have, and will continue to contribute enormously to the WCG Project. AMD released the Phenom II series some time after the release by Intel of their much envied i7 series. Recently AMD released the Quad core Athlons and Intel released the quad core i5 and i7s, capable of running on (Land Gate Array) LGA 1156 motherboards. Supporting the top end CPUs are the mid-range AMD Tripple cores, Intel€s highly clocked (and clockable) Core 2 Duos, and even a few quad core CPUs for laptops. This performance jump is set to be continued by Intel with the release of the i9 CPU, with 6 cores and 12 threads. Although AMD have already released a Hex core CPU, it is not mainstream. It is designed for data centres and cluster servers; concentrating on performance per Watt rather than overall CPU Power - that said there are a few here, towards the top of the systems leaderboard, along with the odd i9 Engineering Sample. Hi skgiven:) You are right, more fast cpu are coming out. I just built a box w/ MSI P55 GD65 mb + Intel core i7 860 lga 1156 last Jan 31'10. I am very happy with it. Running 4 cores/8threads. 8 work units are crunching simultaneously. Very fast. lynx76:) |

This is what I meant by 'caching up' - caching a bunch of work units in my buffers if needs be. I think I'll be close one way or the other but would like to win this particular race after missing out on other badge 'goals' by a small margin. ![]() |

No more Rice for me then, once the current (minor) buffer is cleaned out. Have fun!

As my second computer is on the fritz I've lost half my computing power... and I won't make Sapphire. Instead, I'll let everyone else have the chance and simply crunch the other 5 projects without hunting although all should change to So-So Silver soon. :)

Although I have a target of 1 year 330 days by April 1, I am still 35 days short of 2 years. I would estimate I would need an additional 7 days to get those 35 days of compute time completed without any interruptions. Does anyone think we will have sufficient work left on this project in order to meet those goals?

dkt, I would imagine so - as generally, the techs notify us when the end is truly in sight (i.e., I think - but don't quote me on this, they'll say when there's an estimated 1 month left).
----------------------------------------Thus, I'd say, go for it - go grab that second Sapphire ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by gb009761 at Feb 14, 2010 5:24:22 AM] |
