Windows 7_64 Uitimate and BOINC

Hello. I could install this programm and run it on my computer with Windows 7_64 Ultimate. But when I reboot system Agent did not start. I went to program files (x86), found boincmgr and i got the message that lounching to agent failed. When I reinstaled program it starts but after rebooting the situation repeted. Why? What can I do to force it to work. No problem with VISTA Ultimate but 32 b. Greetings

Try one or more of the following:

-Go to Start>>Run and type "msconfig" and see if BOINC is checked off in the startup tab.
-Try disabling UAC.
-uninstall BOINC and install it by right clicking on the .exe file and choosing "run as administrator".
-install BOINC somewhere other than the Program Files folder, such as c:\BOINC

Seems that W7-64 bit is just a little bit more stern when running 32 bit apps opposed to 64 bit apps. Former install into the Program Files x86 folder, latter in the Program Files folder. Would recommend installing as protected/service, all users at which time you won't be depending on the BOINC Manager to launch the core client.

DO NOT recommend to meddle with the UAC, rather fetch a stable 64 bit client [testing 6.10.19 now with some important fixes it seems, as 6.10.18 IS already obsolete], and get more crunching performance on top for the parts that compute in integer such as particularly with HCC (I'm now convinced, WCG is suggested to make a version for the 64 bit platform). Getting depending on the science 5-25% more throughput on prelim observation).

V6.10.18 is the current stable version, and it's by no means obsolete.

v6.10.19 isn't even announced for alpha-testing yet, often there'll be a day's "internal testing" before a new alpha-build is announced. It's not certain v6.10.19 ever will be deemed stable enough for release, as previous release-series has shown, there'll very often be one or more nasty bugs that'll sneak-in in the alpha-builds after the initial release in a serie, these bugs is normally catched in alpha-testing, and there can be multiple "bad" builds before a new "stable" build is available. While it's been very few problems with the v6.10.xx-release, it's still not advisable to recommend users to jump directly to an untested alpha-build.

Only if there's a specific bug users is having, and it should be fixed in the latest alpha-build, is it normally advicable to recommend users to run the latest alpha-build.

What you yourself tests the latest alpha-build and report any problems is different.

Your sig is not honoring your all. You need to read far more Ingleside, before saying something/anything. The 6.10.19 Windows version announced almost a day ago and commentaries put in over at the developers website speak volumes! It, 6.10.18, IS obsolete, so is my CA guided opinion and as fast as 6.10.17 went, think 6.10.19 will go too. Observations already in.

edit: fixed this posts topic title... hate spelling and grammar slips.

Announcements for alpha-testing goes to the alpha-email-list, not the BOINC web-forums. But granted, many (including myself) immediately jumps on the new build when it shows-up in the download-directory. wink

As for "obsolete", I won't call it obsolete until a new, non-alpha-build is released. But of course, you can of course call the whole v6.10.xx-series for obsolete, since there's already some checkins that won't show-up before in v6.11.x-clients...

Even the current release-version has some bugs, it's not a good idea to start recommending users to jump directly to the latest development-build, especially when it's not even made it to the download_all-page yet. For one thing, they won't see the very clear warning: MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING. Secondly, not being listed normally means haven't had time to do much testing yet, so appart for bugs popping-up nearly immediately on client-start, any other unexpected bugs haven't had the time to surface yet.
Also, there's been instances where builds isn't even intended for alpha-users, but granted this is for the odd-middle-numbered builds.

For the majority of users, using v6.10.18 would be a much better option at this point, than to try v6.10.19, that can fairly quickly be replaced by further builds before next "stable" client is ready for release.

Re: Windows 7_64 Ultimate and BOINC

It is completely, utterly meaningless, which build of these one takes, if one works for a member, just let it be, but if one has the urge to update, no point in going for yes I maintain the now obsolete 6.10.18 64 bit build and grab the next best with more fixes. It works so far.

As for your hair cloning, if the change log forum update appears before the official alpha mail list announcement, I'd consider that even more wrong than it already is. But really, ZERO desire to waste my time arguing that. You can have the last word.

Re: Windows 7_64 Ultimate and BOINC

BOINC Manager Help Menu, Info or About option as with most Windows applications. Also the messages log prints it at start up.

If you really really want to try this alpha client you just need to go back up a few posts in this thread to get the 64 bit version... the topic of this thread... 64 bit.

Re: Windows 7_64 Ultimate and BOINC

I just started a week ago to run Windows 7 64bit Home Premium on an I7-920 CPU. So, with hyperthreading, I would run 8 WU's simultaneously.

I first installed 6.10.18, got a bumper crop of WU's from about a dozen projects to which the machine is attached. But, as they finished, they were not replaced. So, I installed 6.6.38, same result.

I have now dialed back to 5.8.16, which is I believe for 32bit. I am looking to see if I get new WU's as the existing WU's finish up. So far, yes, new ones are downloading. But my list of those waiting to run and waiting to start seems to be diminishing. I mean, you know, most of what we have in other software is 32bit and runs fine on Win 7 64bit.

Is there any data good or bad on Win 7 64bit on an I7 CPU?
