Hi,
I am writing because i am thinking about doing some hardware upgrades on my desktop and wondering what upgrades might make me crunch faster? I am already running 100% cpu usage constantly. Is a processor upgrade necessary or are there other less massive upgrades that could help boost me? I am running core 2 duo 3.0 ghz 4mb and have 4 gb of RAM Thanks |

Crunching speed is 99% dependant on CPU speed and # of cores. More(or faster) RAM, faster hard drives, etc, have little to no effect on crunching.
Since you have a C2D already, the easiest upgrade path would be to a 45nm socket 775 quad core, like the Q9650. Check with your motherboard manufacturer to ensure the proper support though. A Q9650 would give you the same(or slightly better) single-threaded performance as your current CPU, but double your multi-threaded performance(like crunching). If you want to save a few $$, consider the Q9550 and overclock it a tiny bit. |
