There are only 1 or 2 projects on the globe that do have a SPARC science application with BOINC. Have a look at this site http://www.distributedcomputing.info/ to see if there's one for your machine.
----------------------------------------edit: looks like SIMAP (runs few days a month) and SETI have a SPARC ported application.

Talking Virtual Machines? The key is the CPU code. Will it run in absolute total fidelity the x86 code for that is what WCG is compiling the sciences for.
----------------------------------------Then, 1 machine is not enough as it needs to be slotted in with a feeder line. We need many, committed to WCG, before there's merit to provide a special build. Darn, before that rather see effort go into x86_x64 and win a few percentage points from the probably thousands already on x64. See already 10,000 devices attached to WCG with W7 and that's the easiest one to go 64 bit on... they sell it now even in family pack with both the 32 and 64 bit disks included... for only 30 USD more.

The problem with the emulation is, that on SPARC a x86 must been emulated. This results in a very heave performance impact, and made imho no sense from the perfomance sight. The emulated perfomance is as bad as a very old PC. I guess that the emulation would not fit within the deadline.
----------------------------------------If you install Linux, you need a Linux for SPARC, which also executes Linux SPARC binaries. So it's not posible to exceute x86 binaries without emulation. BOINC binaries and SETI applications for Linux SPARC are available on my homepage (www.dotsch.de). A SIMAP application for Linux SPARC is also available. I think, that it makes no sense to install Linux on a SPARC, because Solaris SPARC is and would been more stronger supported by other projects. Yoyo is a project from rechenkraft e.V. which wrappes several other projects... [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dotsch at Dec 8, 2009 7:45:43 AM] |
