Tray icon shows the stopped icon and its tooltip shows "Not connected to a client" Opening the app shows "Starting client services, please wait..." at the lower left. There is nothing in the messages tab. As you have probably guessed, task manager does not show the normal service which runs for each core. The only thing that has changed recently is an updated NIC driver. Trying select computer and then local host just times out with a connection failed dialog asking me if I want to try again. I've tried looking through the FAQs and surprisingly found nothing related to this problem. A forum search has been no help either - see below. Anyone know how to fix this?
----------------------------------------P.S. - What is the problem with the search function in this forum. Anywhere else if I select post title only and then put the search term in quotation marks then it should only return results where that exact phrase is in the title. But not here - it still returns hundreds of unrelated posts! [Edit 4 times, last edit by Former Member at Oct 23, 2009 6:22:58 PM] |

Well, it seems to be a more of a pronounced problem with 6.10 alpha clients, but first why not tell us what the client version is and the operating system and with that your confirmation that boinc.exe, the core client is running in thebackground (see Task Manager or do Top on Linux)
----------------------------------------The quotation marks presently don't work with the brand new forum... mayber 3 weeks old. Tech are still looking for fix. Use AND in capitals to search for multiple words. edit: No I did not guess the service [core client] was not running... but that's your root cause.

Version 6.2.28
WinXP You are correct, boinc.exe is not showing up in task manager - only boincmgr.exe and boinctray.exe. I tried launching boinc.exe directly but that hasn't solved anything. Again, I have no idea what caused this since the only thing that happened around the same timeframe as this problem started was updating the NIC driver. Maybe a coincidence, maybe not but I have no idea what else to do at this point other than uninstalling and reinstalling - something which I'd rather avoid because that sort of 'solution' with no actual resolution tends to make me want to dump the offending app. So I'm still hoping for an actual fix to this problem. |

Run the installer again and choose repair as a first try.
----------------------------------------When you look in Task Manager is there a box left bottom to allow seeing all processes for all users? The most common blockers for a running boincmgr.exe to not be able to connect to the boinc.exe is... AV. New NIC maybe requires new setting of permissions in AV or Firewall.

Repair solved to problem. By the way, just for posterity in case it helps someone else in the future - there was no new NIC but as I said only an updating of the NIC drivers. Also, although I didn't mention it, I had already checked the AV and Firewall logs and there was nothing there to indicate they were the culprit. So, perhaps updating the NIC driver in some way affected how BOINC communicates - I don't know. Lastly, to anyone else who uses the repair option of the installer, be advised it blows out your preferences and apparently resets them to the defaults - at least it did in my case.

To that latter point: Oh, that's quite unexpected [a first to hear of this]. Principally, it should resume to run according the settings of your Website Device Profile.
----------------------------------------Anyway, thanks for the warnings and plz edit your Opening post to insert [RESOLVED] in the title. cheers edit: that was faster than I can type a response :D

Well, the repair solved the problem yesterday but upon the next reboot it's right back to the same thing as before. Any other ideas?

It's almost surely a rights/permissions issue. So whilst suppressing the urge to dump the app, a 2 minute action Uninstall, Reinstall and make sure to select "All Users". When I do this from my Admin User and say Restricted, I somehow even with admin rights have connection issues. Should not loosing any settings, but with BOINC there's always that 0.1% ;>)

OK, I guess I'll just remove the tag from the title and leave this topic open in case it comes up again for someone else and/or a true resolution arises. This is very frustrating because I am the only one with access to this PC and I know that absolutely nothing has changed other than updating my NIC driver. So how BOINC could all of a sudden develop a rights/permissions issue is totally beyond me. I don't like apps with mysterious unresolved problems running on my PC so for the well-being and reliability of a computer upon which I heavily rely, I don't see any alternative but to dump BOINC unless someone can actually come up with an explanation or solution that motivates me to believe I won't be just reinstalling unreliable software.

It's not unreliable software, it's just that it runs in the background and in your case only the admin having control. Given that you are the only one having access, the ALL USER option during install still leaves you as the only, restricted user.
----------------------------------------In the circumstances I'll not ask you to try out the near beta version 6.10.16. After all in a little while that will get promoted to the next recommended WCG release, upon code audit and WCG specific field testing. Maybe the techs have an answer. I'll poll them.
