Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Morning RaymondFO

that's the thing it isn't that simple. I really wish it was

The weather stations report in integer values of centigrade and NOAA now for the USA are converting that value to integer values of Fahrenheit this causes errors in rounding

Then when I convert back to Centigrade also in integer values we lose further fidelity

here's the underlying javascript that drives the NOAA conversion tool.

function ftoc(fahrenheit){
fahrenheit.Celsius.value = Math.round((fahrenheit.tempf.value - 32) * .556) + " C";

The thing that concerns me is the Math.round bit in conjunction with the rounding of that 0.556 which isn't 5/9

Does the Javascript Round at the same point as the Coldfusion round?

see the discussion on this page http://livedocs.adobe.com/coldfusion/8/htmldo...ent=functions_m-r_40.html

Which is why I need to look up table based on the output of NOAA's own conversion methods as there is potential to build in error into something that relies on fine tolerances

66F=19C
67F=19C

Herein lies the problem

biggrin

Does the Javascript Round at the same point as the Coldfusion round?

I think I understand the problem. From what I have been able to find out they both can round at the same point with the appropriate programing. Base upon your link and this Javascript page: http://www.javascriptkit.com/javatutors/round.shtml). The question is how and where do you want to round for Java or Coldfusion and that is dependent upon the programming.

I agree with you the true value of 5/9 is 0.555556 which is why I prefer to use 1.8 as =1/1.8 gives you the 0.555556 value without addressing the rounding concept into the equation (.556 issue). This is why I would use the C=(F-32)/1.8 equation and then if needed use the appropriate rounding function to the specific decimal point for a project.

Why NOAA is converting from C to F is unknown to me as I would prefer C for international conformity purposes. But then again, what do I know?

I have no other explanations for this situation. Good Luck!!

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Cheers RaymondFO thanks for your support, it's appreciated.

The Fahrenheit Temps....It's an American thing flag

In the UK we think in Fahrenheit when it's warm and Centigrade/Celsius when it's 0 or below

biggrin

As I need my data to be "beyond doubt" and "unquestionable" I'm going to take the belt and braces approach and use a look up table based entirely on the temperature conversion tool's output provided by NOAA themselves wink

I will then be able to make reference to it, and provide the link http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ffc/html/metcalc.php and also show the data in that lookup table, in my methodology statement

MySQL might have a bit of extra work to do but I have a feeling it will be worth it in the long run

In the series so far we have had a Maximum Temp of 52C and a Minimum of -53C

I'll build it for + or - 70C that should cover it

(or maybe -64 to +76 to cope with "the future" biggrin )

Cheers
Dave

incidentally it's -10C outside at 9am local time

The story across Europe is much the same

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Strange this weather thingy is. Last winter we had our coldest December ever and one of our coldest winters on record. This year the grass in my front year is still green (usually brown and dormant this time of year) and my hibiscus plants are still blooming. *This one's for you Al tongue *

Just started Snowing

This is a normal winter. For us in the UK Winter usually starts just after my Birthday.

I'm older but not wiser on Monday

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

that's the realtime working again biggrin

Now to backfill with the real data I have been capturing since the 2nd at 8pm

Then interpolate with hourly linear progression the bit that I missed while I was out earning a crust

...as you wouldn't believe it but I'm not a "Big Oil" Shill biggrin

Just someone who would like to know the truth

Thank you NOAA for the unexpected challenge peace

UK elderly are “wasting too many bedrooms” imageLondon, England-In yet another outrageous piece of social engineering from our coalition government, pensioners will be encouraged to downsize to smaller properties allowing local councils to rent their homes out as council houses and manage the tenancy. http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/arti...ions&utm_medium=email

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

...and finally

Slightly delayed due to a small spanner in the works from our friends at NOAA (now sorted)

The average Global Temperature (from the 2586 24/7 active NOAA Weather Stations) for January 2012 is 3.313C up from 1.433C for Jan 2011

The story so far

Jan 2011 1.433C
Feb 2011 2.913C
Mar 2011 6.971C
Apr 2011 12.282C
May 2011 16.184C
Jun 2011 20.461C
Jul 2011 22.832C
Aug 2011 22.197C
Sep 2011 18.738C
Oct 2011 13.523C
Nov 2011 8.361C
Dec 2011 4.834C
Jan 2012 3.313C

J-D 12.614C
F-J 12.773C

For a bigger picture check here

The reason for the bite out of 3 of the days is that I lost 2 days and 1 hour of real data due to NOAA's redesign for the USA and I have had to do a linear regression between the start and end points across the gap.

You can see how unnatural it looks but that's the best I can do in the circumstances - Normal data collection was resumed on the 2nd Feb at 19:00 the last valid data collected from the old design was on the 31st Jan at 18:00

Not bad considering I was In London on the 31st and 1st Feb (+ at work on the 2nd until 5pm) wink

Rapid Application (RE)Design by Dave "I'm not a Software Engineer" Autumns biggrin

peace
