Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

not LOL

http://teqs.net/report/

1. TEQs (Tradable Energy Quotas) is an electronic energy rationing system designed to be implemented at the national scale.

2. There are two reasons why such a scheme may be needed:

Climate change: to guarantee achieving national carbon reduction targets.
Energy supply: to maintain a fair distribution of fuel and electricity during shortages.

3. TEQs (pronounced “tex”) are measured in units.

4. Every adult is given an equal free Entitlement of TEQs units each week. Other energy users (Government, industry etc.) bid for their units at a weekly Tender, or auction.

5. If you use less than your Entitlement of units, you can sell your surplus. If you need more, you can buy them. All trading takes place at a single national price, which will rise and fall in line with demand. Buying and selling would be as easy as topping up an Oyster card or mobile phone.

6. All fuels (and electricity) carry a “carbon rating” in units; one unit represents one kilogram of carbon dioxide – or the equivalent in other greenhouse gases – released in the fuel’s production and use.

7. When you buy energy, such as petrol for your car or electricity for your household, units corresponding to the amount of energy you have bought are deducted from your TEQs account, in addition to your money payment. TEQs transactions are generally automatic, using credit-card or (more usually) direct-debit technology.

8. The total number of units available in the country is set out in the TEQs Budget. The size of the Budget goes down year-by-year – step-by-step, like a staircase.

9. The Budget is set by the Committee on Climate Change, which is independent of the Government. The Government is itself bound by the TEQs scheme; its role is to support the country in thriving on the available carbon/energy.

10. Since the national TEQs price is determined by national demand, it is transparently in everyone’s interest to help each other to reduce their energy demand, and to work together, encouraging a national sense of common purpose.

Suddenly http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2008/pdf/ukpga_20080027_en.pdf doesn't look so benign

And I don't look quite so much like a one track record of concern

Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK is the title of the thread. MMGW is a political tool through which draconian measures can be "justified"

MMGW is not measurable MMGW is not happening MMGW is a political tool

John Hemming MP, Chairman, All Party Parliamentary Group on Peak Oil-------It should be Mr. Lemming ---Lemmings are small rodents, usually found in or near the Arctic, in tundra biomes. They are subniveal animals, and together with voles and muskrats, they make up the subfamily Arvicolinae (also known as Microtinae), which forms part of the largest mammal radiation by far, the superfamily Muroidea, which also includes rats, mice, hamsters, and gerbils.---from Wikipedia--- sad

With Fuel prices being what they are in the UK including a colossal element of taxation what kind of insane Government is contemplating giving out weekly tokens which if exhausted before Friday you have to purchase more to continue to keep warm or go anywhere ..... mine.

I spent last weekend trapped (Pre tokens)

I had paid out the £160 (inc VAT) to prevent the almost £1.29 a litre being sprayed directly onto the road and then the battery failed, rescued again by Green Flag. crying I could not afford a new Battery until I got paid on Monday so....that's my weekend not going anywhere. Owning the greenest Car on the lot biggrin

It's looking good and running smoothly now. I think I'll buy a radiator this week and sling it in the boot, just in case. Next week maybe a water pump biggrin

By the way that local Star of ours is calm and spotless again

Here's a great page after a worthwhile hit on your Internet connection courtesy of the Solar Dynamics Observatory Satellite now high over New Mexico

Space Weather News for Jan. 28, 2011
http://spaceweather.com

DOUBLE BLAST: This morning, a spectacular double eruption on the sun produced the strongest solar flare of the year so far (an M1-class event). Plasma clouds produced by the event are expected to miss Earth, so no geomagnetic storms are in the offing. Today's edition of http://spaceweather.com highlights movies captured by SOHO and the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

STRANGE LIGHT PILLARS: A photographer has recorded extraordinary pillars of light shooting into the night sky from a corn mill in Nebraska. The tall luminous columns were capped with nested V-shaped tops that distinguish them from ordinary urban light pillars. Check http://spaceweather.com for must-see photos and an explanation of the icy phenomenon.

TEXT MESSAGES FROM THE SUN: Would you like a text message when the sun flares and geomagnetic storms erupt? Sign up for our new alert service, SpaceWeather Text: http://spaceweathertext.com .

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

The Government Chappy finally made it to Dawlish to make another crazy announcement - the one about the fish in the Lake District biggrin

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12302555

and here's that link that was lost somewhere in the early hours of the morning

A bit of a history lesson as to why saying

"
One of its most vulnerable stretches of track is on the south Devon coast between Dawlish and Teignmouth where storms have often seen waves break over the line.

Network Rail says the sea level at this point has risen 30cm since 1840 and is projected to rise by a further 70cm by 2050 and 1.45m by 2100. The risk of the track being 'overtopped' is predicted to increase by 50% by 2020 and to treble by 2080.

It has already invested £8.5m in the past 10 years in fortifying the sea defences and establishing an early warning system to watch for rockfalls from the cliffs.

Network Rail believes it is "ahead of the game" by planning for future changes but warns that any adaptation will need to be dove-tailed with flood protection schemes for neighbouring Teignmouth and Dawlish.
"

is a bit silly as yep that's going to happen with a few big waves

http://www.therailwaycentre.com/Dawlish%20Sea...s/Dawlish_SW_history.html

I was lucky enough to live in Dawlish for a while

The station is right on the Sea Front and I have been standing in the inland platform and the waves have crashed over the trains standing at the seaward platform and land on me

That's what happens when you build your train lines and consequently train stations on the edge of the sea

sea here wink a 125 parked in the Station

That millpond is the English Channel and I can assure you it's not always that calm and with the tide not always that far away from the land biggrin

Sometimes a little perspective is needed when interpreting that "alarming" news item

A little perspective is what is also needed when you read this bold claim

"The latest projections suggest the potential for major change - for example that it is "very likely" that southern England will on average be 2.2-6.8C warmer by the 2080s".

During the 20th Century the temperature rose (with an increasingly active Sun) by 0.7C. Not 1 not 2 just 0.7 of 1 degree C

What do you think it is doing in the 21st with an increasingly inactive Sun?

The average temperature as measured in central England in 2010 was 8.83C

Now....

In 70 years time what do you think is the likelihood "that southern England will on average be 2.2-6.8C warmer by the 2080s"

"Very likely" as claimed or "not very likely at all" if you allow the use of your own grey matter

You are still thinking about that Sea Level Rise at Dawlish

Get you noggin around this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-glacial_rebound

In Great Britain, glaciation affected Scotland but not Southern England, and the post-glacial rebound of northern Great Britain is causing a corresponding downward movement of the southern half of the island.[8] This is leading to an increased risk of floods, particularly in the areas surrounding the lower River Thames. Along with rising sea levels caused by global warming, the post-glacial sinking of southern England is likely to seriously compromise the effectiveness of the Thames Barrier, London's most important flood defence, after about 2030.

(Ignore the obligatory nonsense global warming reference)

Those Glacier's have been retreating for a long while which if the nice man from Defra took some time out to take a look is why, coming full circle, those Lakes are found in the lake district and why Wordworth et al wax so lyrical about the beauty of the place.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_District
"
The Lake District is approximately 34 miles (55 km) across. Its features are a result of periods of glaciation, the most recent of which ended some 10,000 years ago. These include the ice-carved wide U-shaped valleys, many of which are now filled with the lakes that give the park its name.
"

Yep Climate Changes thank goodness

A lot of utter nonsense is spouted in it's name though

But if you take the time to delve that bit deeper behind those insane headlines the effort is worth the reward

Keep thinking

Dave

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Here you go Dave---he world is now cooling.”-- Piers Corbyn, of the long range forecaster, Weather Action, predicted more cold winters and cool summers. “In the winter reservoir levels will be low but they will probably pick up in the summer because we will have more rain. There will be regional differences because it will depend on where the high pressure might be.”

Mr Corbyn said the conditions had “nothing to do with global warming”, and he added: “The world is now cooling.”

He said: “It is changes in the position of the jet stream caused by changes in solar activity and lunar modulation.

“It is low solar activity but there are very specific lunar modulations which cause the jet stream to get stuck in certain ways, one of which is to give cold northerly blasts in the winter.”

Re: Not sure how much longer they will be able to keep crunching in the UK

Morning marysduby

This will be the third bad Winter in the UK on the trot and we now have 2 warm weeks in April we call Summer wink

Piers is a maverick but he has his eyes open to allow variables such as the Sun into his forecasting. He is also cannily accurate unlike our BBQ Summer warming obsessed Met Office

I have got to find out what causes the wave in this record

Maybe it's Lunar Modulation I don't know

But it's real enough and it is cyclical

Here's another Cartoon by Josh

http://www.cartoonsbyjosh.com/met_computer_scr.jpg

By the way I should probably point out that there is nothing wrong with the Met Offices Supercomputer it is one of the fastest in the land and technologically awesome

see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/corporate/pressoffice/2008/pr20080804.html

It's lighteningly fast execution of software code biased by incorrect assumptions that creates incorrect forecasts

Nowt wrong with the hardware Big Blue blushing
