Kevin, I can see some potential "problems" with going this route. You have a valid point about a potential new user joining and signing up to receive only DDDT-1 work and then not getting anything. The flip side to that is that it's likely to impact a larger amount of current users (as opposed to new users) in that there are those of us who sometimes adjust our current projects. If I understand what you said correctly, that means that once we switch to a new project or a new project mix, that we will then in effect never have an option to receive any DDDT-1 units ever again. For those of us who are "chasing" other badges (probably the most frequent reason for changing our project mix) and are only a short distance away from the next badge level in DDDT-1, we will then have no way to possibly enter the pool for those last few needed DDDT-1 WU's. Also, if one selects "all projects" will that select DDDT-1 even though it is no longer a visible checkbox? What about a simple change to the project selection page which would indicate that the project is intermittant and that selecting only that project may result in not getting any WU's at all. I know those working behind the scenes at WCG likely have more pressing and important things to worry about and concentrate on, but for those of us in the situation described above, we'd appreciate any consideration. Other thoughts on this? Thanks I'm also running in trouble as I only have CEP and Dengue. My 'home' profile was Dengue only and 'work' / 'default' have the combination CEP/Dengue. My thoughts are, that I could change one of the a CEP/Dengue profiles and can be back to Dengue with a change of the Device profile. Right? |

Kevin will have to answer how it works in the background, but he did say "My Projects". Did it put a hidden box into the Device Profiles and what happens if a device profile is resaved?
----------------------------------------A solution could have been to leave the project and as with past projects that had e.g. a [Only available on UD Agent] suffix, to have a comment behind them on the science-project selection page. There could have been (thinking aloud) a thought there to stop people from setting profiles to a idle/intermittent project that is known to have no work and unselect the alternate work box so they can be resting assured to only receive the scarce Beta work, when it's announced... one of the reasons I'll not write a "how to get more beta work" faq ;>)

Frankly though, when reading the formal announcement and news letter ending paragraph
----------------------------------------From the "My Projects" page, select one or more of the other projects in which you would like to participate or check the box labeled "If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project" and then press "save". then reading basically in this thread "do not touch My Projects or you'll lose future DDDT-1 participation" causes a ? in bold to appear over my head.

I like to fine-tune my profiles from time to time, and as soon as I do that my DDDT selection disappears and cannot be reinstated unless I accept all available projects?
----------------------------------------I do think the all-or-nothing solution is suboptimal, and I hope the DDDT checkbox will be made available again, with perhaps an additional descriptor like "intermittent" or "low availability". For perhaps selfish reasons, I have to agree that taking away the ability to opt in to DDDT is premature. Especially since it appears that 'some' catchup/repair WUs might yet be released.
----------------------------------------I had DDDT as my only selection in hopes of getting 12 additional hours of work that I need for the next level badge. Now it seems that possibility is gone, even though there may be, might be, some WUs released as the project goes through final validation of results. My vote, if there are WUs to come, even sporadically, the choice to try to receive some of them should be available to all. If the DDDT project is complete and all WUs are accounted for, then treat it like other complete projects and stop the ability to opt-in. But don't tease us with the chance of the last few hours of crunching that we need for a badge level, and then tell us we can't even sign up. |

Ok - the fans have spoken.
We will create a project designation for intermittent projects (different than beta): This will show up as intermittent on the stats webpages. It will show up on the My Projects page, Registration and on the Device Profile page but it will be in a separate section called 'Intermittent' projects. We will add text explaining that these projects will frequently not have work available to send out and that it is highly encourage that the member select from the regular list of projects or check the 'in the event of no work from selected projects, send work from other projects'. DDDT will be set to this status once it is available. This will allow the members to set the projects as they desire. |

I wonder if this will be the lottery I win and those last 12 hours I need for DDDT Ruby will show up on one of my machines!
----------------------------------------Thanks, I appreciate the change of heart by WCG and the final shot at getting those 12 hours. |

Thanks, I appreciate the change of heart by WCG I echo that sediment. Given the limited (and not even guaranteed) supply of future units I don’t have high hopes of getting that last badge I am reaching for but just knowing that I have a chance even a small one makes me feel better. I know this will come at a cost of some effort from the Techs. I want you to know that it is appreciated. Since this is really for the benefit of the badge chasers I wonder if anyone has looked what effect badges have had in addition work done from the grid at large. I know that it has motivated me to do more. -Jasm

Thank you Kevin
----------------------------------------I know you folks do a ton of work that most of us probably don't often realize. Just wanted to let you know that it's appreciated.
