I recently purchased a new Systemax PC that has an Intel i7 CPU in it with 12 gigs RAM. I'm now running 8 World Community Grid projects on it at a time. My second Computer that I bought a year ago has an Intel Dual Quad CPU in it and I'm running 4 World Community Grid projects at a time on it. Running both computers together, hopefully, I'll be able to obtain over a million points per month. Time will tell though.
----------------------------------------I'm just wondering what different "type" of computers "others" are running that have given them the ability to gain many points per month and also, "Are there any "tweaking tricks" to get a computer to "crunch" more World Community points per month? I keep both computer systems running 24/7. I'm also running 64 bit Vista on both of them. Well, you all have a good day. Bob_F [Edit 1 times, last edit by Bob_F at Aug 23, 2009 1:54:45 AM] |

I've been running an i7 for a month now. It seems to rack up about 20,000 points a day and about 8 "days" of computing per day. This is on 64 bit Ubuntu. I undervolt to save power and run cool, but don't overclock. The points per day is probably somewhat dependent on which applications you are running. The don't all seem to be the same.
The i7 has only 4 cores, but each core supports 2 hyperthreads. It looks like 8 processors (threads) to the OS, but the throughput is less than 8 times a single thread. Still, it's a great WCG / BOINC machine. One way to measure it is by the MIPS benchmark divided by system power consumption: I get about 300 Whetstone (integer) MIPS per Watt. (Another would be MIPS per dollar, roughly 22.) My 6 GB of RAM is way overkill for WCG by the way. The apps I have run would be happy with 2 and certainly 3 GB for 8 threads. (All bets are off for Vista, of course!) Martin |

An i7-920 clocked to app 3800 should make a million a month.
----------------------------------------That's only 33+K a day for a 30 day month. As to what machines are making points at this level your really limited to a i7 overclocked or the dual and quad socket systems. According to BOINC stats the top machine looking at the last months stats is a 32 core Opteron system. Thats a quad socket board with the additional daughter board for four more cpus or 8-quad core cpu's on one board. VERY expensive to build as the cpu's are over $2000.00 each. Way out of my league so I have to settle for #2 spot with my W5590's for the time being.. http://boincstats.com/stats/host_stats.php?pr...active=&st=0&or=8 ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Aug 23, 2009 1:55:20 AM] |

Thanks Martin and Movieman for the information.
Your right Martin about it having 4 cores only but, like you said, it does look like it has eight cores when it is running the WCG. It Runs 8 jobs at a time and it appears to be fast. I'll find out in a month how it is doing. I also understand what you are doing with the Whetstone MIPS per watt. Per watt would be a good way of looking at it. Movieman. That Opteron sounds like "one hell of a cruncher" and like you stated, it's quite expensive. It would definitely change one's point rankings very quickly. I also thank you for the "link". Well, both of you have a good weekend. Bob F. |

MM - I am looking forward to upgrading i7 to hex ![]() Me too, heard that I'm getting "something special" soon.. six core chip at ..nah, you wouldn'tbeleive me.. What i want is a pair of 6 core Gulftowns to knock off that 32 core Opty from the #1 position. If they scale like the Gainestowns then 2-6 core chips will beat that 32 core system easily.. Thanks Bob_F, good weekend to you also.. ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by Movieman at Aug 23, 2009 5:35:10 AM] |

Tripholiada,
um... you n' me both Everytime I even think about asking the question about how much something like that costs, I hear myself saying; if you have to ask how much it is, then you likely can't afford it! ![]() |

Tripholiada, um... you n' me both Everytime I even think about asking the question about how much something like that costs, I hear myself saying; if you have to ask how much it is, then you likely can't afford it! ![]() The duals and quad socket machines are big money but 2-i7-920 machines properly set up will outdo my W5590's any day and at a hell of a lot less money. I just have this thing for Workstation quality dual socket machines. On a perfect day I'll get app 56,000WCG points on my Gainestown rig. Divide that by 2 and thats 28,000PPD and easily done on a i7-920. Planning will save you lots of money. If your in the USA Microcenter does a deal fairly often for a i7-920 at $200.00 Important, buy a ThermalRight UltraExtreme 120 Heatsink for $65.00 and a GOOD 120x38mm fan in the 80+CFM range: $20.00 The i7's are very 'hot" chips and need the best cooling you can put in place. Then a good board like one of the Gigabyte's at say $250.00 Then 3x1 gig or 2 gig of DDR3-1600 for another $200.00 GOOD PSU like the PCP+C 610 Silencers for app $100 on sale. Cheap vid card for under $40.00 DVDRW for $25.00 80 gig SATA HD from the Egg for under $40.00 Scrounge a case or buy a cheapo for $40.00 and leave the side off. Add it all up and your at app $1000.00 for a machine that will do well over 30,000 a day. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Movieman at Aug 23, 2009 5:46:31 PM] |

If you have an old P4 you could reuse the case, PS, dvd/cd monitor/ keyboard etc (until you can afford to get those things) so all you are left for an initial outlay is $200 CPU( yes, I am referring to the same Microcenter deal), MOBO prices are dropping to about $170 (you could be daring and try an open box special for 130$), 3x1 1600 GB RAM will only run you $100 and finally where I differ (but really should be deferring
) is that I think second tier cooling will be OK (I am using xigmatek 1283 with it's stock fan for $45 and am well cooled for the volts I am comfortable with running 24/7) so basically you can get in the door for just under $500 but you really should upgrade to Movieman's suggestions as you can. What a great list of ideas for xmas presents . And that's not alll ... you get to upgrade to six core next year (I have no idea on pricing) with all the rest of the equipment staying the same (it should only be a bios update) and same power use. |
