Upgrading computer

Hi
My Computer has just died on me crying
Time to upgrade, would like to try and future proof on any developments that may occur here.
Have read many posts about Cuda, Graphic cards etc.just get lost in all the jargon.
If in the future WCG does go down this route What is the best to get ?The computer I had my eye on has 1GB ATI Radeon HD4890 graphics which I'm thinking is useless .Do not want to use it for other projects eg GPU grid Milkyway etc.purely insurance for over here.
What is the best way to go please, any help much appreciated ,going round in circles here.
Thanks
Chris.

Re: Upgrading computer

Hi Chris,

To begin to answer your questions you need to do a self assessment.

1). What do you intend to do with this machine?
gaminig
WCG only
email / word procesing

2). How fast do you really want it to be?
normal
overclocked - minor
overclocked - major
overclocked - extreme or crazy?

3) how much $ do you want to spend?

4) are you going to put it together or is this something you want to go and get off the shelf or have it custom built?

The first question is the most important all the rest can be sorted out later; but clearly define your needs / wants then figure out what meets your needs and the specifications can be derived.

Re: Upgrading computer

Hi BarneyBadass
Mainly for crunching
It would have to be off the shelf as have very little know how.
Something like this
but hopefully not the price biggrin
With Windows 7
There was mention in the forums that maybe one day HCC may use other processing methods that is what i would like to be ready for It is this stuff I have a problem understanding.Does it need to be A Nividia graphics card not sure if Boinc supports ATI to be honest the more I try to fathom this stuff out the more confused I'm getting.
Cheers
Chris.

Re: Upgrading computer

It really is not difficult to build your own PC, I just built my first one last March and had no problems and you can save lots of money.

The thing with graphics card processing is that no one really know right now waht/ if/ when WCG will be hosting a science app that can use a graphics card, much less which vendor, or even if it will be specific to any particular vendor. If you wanted to go the *safe* route choose an NVidia graphics card as there is already the CUDA api (again, no project on WCG uses it) and I can't imagine they will ignore OpenCL which is my guess for where gpu crunching is headed towards.

Re: Upgrading computer

As the graphics card is the easiest part in your computer to replace, I recommend you now choose some budget card. It will take time to get nvidia and ati cards work properly in these projects and then your graphic card is old already.

Re: Upgrading computer

Hi
just to say took the excellent advice and did in the end build my own.
Based it around the i7 920 chip.Chuffed to bits with it, been going strong for about3 weeks now, much easier than I thought would definitely recommend the self build route
Cheers
Chris.
