This was the very 1st thing we changed: We got tired of wandering away and returning to find the system had decided it needed a coffee break and a siesta ![]() Hi, TheGrandKids! Looks like I was right. You have the power plan set to "Balanced". This will have CPU settings that slow the processor down when you're not using the computer. Changing the sleep time isn't enough these days. It will be hidden in the advanced settings, but if you change the plan from "Balanced" to "Maximum Performance" it should take care of all the settings for you. |

This was the very 1st thing we changed: We got tired of wandering away and returning to find the system had decided it needed a coffee break and a siesta ![]() Win7 has 3 different plans, but only shows 2 of them on top while the 3rd. (high performance) is at the bottom. The easiest is to select "high performance", and make sure it's this is being edited. It is possible to edit "Balanced" also, but it's more settings to change so... As far as cpu-speed goes, the defaults of "high performance" is 100%, but would personally still recommend to check then to turn-off displays, and then to turn-off hd's. (of course, if you've only got one hd, it's unlikely it will be turned-off while you're running BOINC...) edit - according to the "Balanced" power-plan, the cpu is allowed to slow-down to 5% of normal speed... Now, under which conditions it will slow-down I don't know, I can't see any settings for this in windows, but with "Sleep"-mode defaulting to after 30 minutes, would expect cpu-throttling happens sooner than this... ![]() "I make so many mistakes. But then just think of all the mistakes I don't make, although I might." [Edit 1 times, last edit by Ingleside at Aug 19, 2009 1:43:58 PM] |

Didactylos,
Thanks for pointing us in the right direction. There seems to be a lot of new stuff to learn with this new system and Win 7. Ingleside, Thanks for the help. We had modified the "balanced" values to never sleep, and do most of the things in the "performance" mode. We will see how this system behaves now. We would be interested to know if others are running similar systems and what they are seeing in the way of cpu results when they request cpu benchmarks. We're not sure what we should be expecting. And, we really is "WE"... There seems to be enough capacity in this system that we can let it run and participate in good things while letting us do homework and other stuff. And we let it run while we are at school since we're not using it, we should let it do good things. Anyway, it's off to school for us but we'll be back to see how this is behaving later on. |

We have a question.
These work units, do they use floating point or integer computations? |

AutoDock (FightAIDS@Home) is almost exclusively floating point.

Didactylos,
we thank you for the info, so the next question is, does the site have a list of what work units use integer and what work unit use floating point? |

Hi again,
----------------------------------------Well, we are back! We went over to our Granddad's house and asked him for some observations on what we were seeing. Of course his first comment was, install it on my machine and lets see what we can find out. So we installed WCG on his system, and the comparisons are all listed below.
The first thing we can see is a huge difference in floating point and integer calculations on the Q6600 when compared to the i7 920 either at base or when over clocked to 4.1 Ghz. The other thing we can see is the difference in the operating systems, Q6600 is running XP Pro (32 bit) and the i7 is running Windows 7. We called up Granddad and asked him more questions and his question back to us was; is the code optimized for one platform or another and can we get an optimized program for the i7 presuming it's needed? We expected the i7 to out perform Granddads old Q6600. What are we missing? The Kids [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 20, 2009 4:21:07 PM] |

The i7 includes all sorts of advanced circuitry to slow down the clock and reduce power usage. You need to go to Advanced Options in your Power Usage and tell it to run at 100%.

----------------------------------------for sure there is something throttling you back as your benchmarks should be more like 9000/ 11000 or thereabouts depending on OC. There are no optimized apps for these projects. {edit} oops ... benchies should be around 3500 / 11000 {/edit} Steve [Edit 1 times, last edit by Steve WCG at Aug 20, 2009 9:00:03 PM] |
