I sure, that WCG needs to add Russian language into the list of available languages because it will grow number of member of WCG substantially.
----------------------------------------Many many people in Russia keep desire to do good deeds since from old times of former USSR. It is no joke! I know many people who can participate to WCG, however, they want to know truth about goals and objectives of WCG. It is not possible to read so much English text for many Russian-speaking people. Just trust me. I participated to first project of United Devices many years ago and I know what I say and I sure -- Russian support will dramatically increase number of members from Russia. BOINC already have Russian support, in this way WCG needs to translate to Russian only static pages of worldcommunitygrid.org and messages in configuration and statistics pages. To administration of WCG: Is it real for WCG? PS. I made new thread intentionally (instead to write to existing thread with related topic) because I suppose it is very profitably for WCG! i am guessing the only thing stopping them is a person to convert the pages to Russian... as i am sure you know the online text converters work well enough to get the meaning but not to present a professional site.
----------------------------------------I look forward to see more people join this project for any reason.. and if i had the skill i would offer it but i do not speak any languages besides English so i cant help good luck ![]() |

I tried to check some "converters" from English to Russian. Unfortunately, the quality is not enough for do it directly. It needs to much manual corrections after such "translation". Amount of such work is comparable with amount of work by manual translation "from zero".

To administration of WCG: Is it real for WCG? At this time we have no plans for additional languages. Our studies have shown that when we add a language to the site, there are not a significant number of people joining from countries where that language is spoken. We may revisit this in 2010. Thanks for asking. |

Adding a language is a necessary but not sufficient condition for getting a large membership from a population.

I suppose, in case of Russia it can be another statistics because we have many enthusiasts that will invite their friends to participate.
Formerly, I met with distrust of some people to such projects like UD and WCG because they had no enough information about this and they feared that these computations will do some another than announced. Of course, if they could read your site freely, these fears could be vanished. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------For my-self, I am not a Russian speaker but I consider that Stanislav's opinion is pretty close to the reality. In my job, I meet regularly east european people - mostly working for the pharmaceutical industry - and I recognize the difficulty for them to feel comfortable enough in English. I mean that we should not think about such translation work in a limited short term perspective. Even if not so many new members join WCG just after a Russian version is available, it is anyway a positive contribution for a middle and a long term development. I know how difficult it is to release a new language for WCG. The first workaround would be to make some content available into Russian language on the WCG wiki and to refer clearly the wiki on WCG web site. I hope that enough knowledgeable volunteers could support such an initiative. Cheers, Yves |

Thanks to all for interest to this subject.
----------------------------------------Just for information: look to the number of people who speaks or can understand Russian language. It is ~278 million ! Thus, just think again about potential of growing WCG volunteers after opening Russian version of WCG site. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Stanislav Kuznetsov at Aug 5, 2009 8:59:25 AM] |

Here's an example of efforts deployed by rilian http://distributed.org.ua/index.php?go=Pages&in=view&id=152 which acts as a double whammy, maybe triple. It's user owned, easy to customize, easy to expand, and advertises a national team also. Think he's done an outstanding job of providing full install instructions. With the WCG wiki it's easy to tap into the original English, share the available images and adapt to cultural needs not even costly professional translaters can offer, plus it creates a feel of ownership and involvement.
----------------------------------------WCG on the other hand only updates/synchronises translations once a year, so for instance we now have additional Result Status page filters, but only in English.

This is Ukranian team. I found another example: site of 'Russia' team . It has more information and installation instructions too. Also, many Russian text information about WCG and other distributed computations presented on site distributed.ru . |
