Facebook

I came across this article this morning. Looks like this should have been something WCG had jumped on or thought of.

Re: Facebook

Yes, GridRepublic same as BAM, is a central account manager. They had BOINC 6.8 customized for them with extra bells to integrate e.g. FaceBook. At GridRepublic the WCG project is one of the many that can be managed through their application, see here http://www.gridrepublic.org/index.php?page=projects with WCG in left margin third spot. The enrollment page even allows to select the individual WCG science projects, so a great alternate entry point to WCG. Not heard anything through the backdoor, but something looks to be afoot when getting:

ERROR: World Community Grid requires users to have unique names (unlike other projects, which require only a unique email address). Your name appears to be already taken at World Community Grid. Please provide a new name below.

Re: Facebook

As long as it helps to get more members. I'm currently working on trying to get the company I work for to start running WCG. We have 6000+ workstations. Granted if approved it wouldn't run on all of them but hopefully a good chunk. I got past the first stage...my manager is really interested in this and he is going to take it to our Director to see if we can pilot it on some training room PCs.

If you're interested in following World Community Grid on Facebook, there is an official Fan Page here: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/World...-Grid/197379135651?ref=ts as well as as our own custom application: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/apps/application.php?id=5833215229&ref=ts

We do hope to continue to improve the application - it would be ideal to be able to allow registration from the Facebook app itself instead of just providing functionality for people who are already members of World Community Grid. That said, we're short on resources, as usual, and have a mountain of things we want to do.

PS: You can also follow WCG on Twitter: https://twitter.com/WCGrid

Re: Facebook

For some reason, the "official" application tries to recruit people to the facebook team. I never got a response when I asked the developers about this.

It would be possible to have WCG members join in through the PTP Facebook application, but would require some work on creating more of the standardized BOINC RPC call system to the WCG servers and working with GridRepublic.

It is my understanding that WCG transitioned into BOINC from another distributed computing system and so has some custom software and legacy software which they customized. That would be the reason there is not full compatibility to allow such a integration right away. With some work though WCG could recruit members through the PTP Facebook application and allow the users to manage their preferences there.

I think this could be beneficial for both WCG due to the broad appeal and current brand image and good for volunteer computing in general by creating a standard for participation. Speaking strictly on behalf of myself and no one else.
