Greetings,
----------------------------------------Thanks to everyone who has been contributing towards the RICE project. This project has run low on work units faster than we expected! Therefore we have slowed down the project while the researchers are working on preparing additional work units. We expect this to be a temporary situation but we do not have estimates on how long the slowdown will last. By initiating the slow down, we are ensuring that people, who only have RICE selected, don't go idle. Thank you for your patience and massive contributions! -Uplinger [Edit 1 times, last edit by uplinger at Aug 31, 2009 2:04:48 PM] |

Is this slowdown still active? I receive Rice WU's on regular bases, and have not noticed any thing unusual for week at all.

Well I'm deeply disappointed having to conclude that even hosting my charts on the Help Others site could not invite you to actually look at #8 of 30 first to know what the real slowdown is since -Uplinger's advise.

I can see that the curve is turning down, but that could be members removing NRW from their profiles maybe... Okey, I admit that I wasn't looking very good at that slide..... ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by kskjold at Jul 31, 2009 11:57:57 AM] |

Just curious ... It seems that RICE has steadied off at the slower pace ... Is it now expected to stay at this rate till the end?, or is the slowdown still considered temporary? And, I guess my real question is whether RICE is still expected to last until sometime around the February timeframe?

Just curious ... It seems that RICE has steadied off at the slower pace ... Is it now expected to stay at this rate till the end?, or is the slowdown still considered temporary? And, I guess my real question is whether RICE is still expected to last until sometime around the February timeframe? Hi dbeeler Rice will remain at the slower pace until the scientists have the next batch of work units to go out. This simply prevents the project from having prolonged outages if the current work units get used up... a situation which has caused many questions and debates in other projects (well, one project in particular springs to mind) where the processing of WUs was moving faster than the release from the researchers. A slowdown in WUs tends to be far less noticable in the long run than a temporary "outage". As uplinger's post suggests, once new batches of WUs are released the project may speed up again to ensure that it has a fair share of the processing power available through the grid. The estimated end date of next February is based on the best available data and its interpretation by those with some of the best knowledge of what's going on, however this should not be relied on as an absolute. There's a chance that the date may vary as other factors change and the project may suddenly finish earlier than the predicted date (as in the DDDT project) or perhaps go on longer. The best bet is to keep an eye on the charts and also any threads like these referring to project speed, progress and work unit availability. |

Gordoma et al,
----------------------------------------the trickle approach ensures that those that have a particular project as their sole favored will have work, particular those that do not have the "If there is no work... " option selected. It's by-product is that it serves those who are looking to complete their crunching target in a steady pace, 14, 45, 90, 180 days, 1 or 2 years. WCG has soft target completion dates agreed with the project scientists. If a science/phase finishes early, great, and if that target is under threat, the volume can be pumped up (not limitless), reshuffling the sub-project division, the brilliant part of WCG. As it is, this slow down knocked the computed end date right back to the approximate target date. That 'computed' is rather fuzzy, since I cannot see the number of seeds and proteins done, so progress in the charts is recalibrated each time the scientists update their progress report. The last one, link in chart http://protinfo.compbio.washington.edu/rice/status.html was April, not exactly the hoped for quarterly

I e-mailed them asking for a up date but that and $5 buys you a coffee, maybe!

Greetings,
Sorry for the slow updates to everyone. The researchers have started sending us some of the new batches last week. Since these are new batches and the process for creating them has changed a little we needed to run them through alpha testing first. After they have gone through alpha testing we will be releasing them to beta. If all goes well, then we should be putting them into production early next week. So, just to let everyone know, the alpha testing is going well so far. We don't expect to see anything new on the beta test. The beta test will not be very large but that means we should be able to finish it quickly. Then it is on to production and then boosting up the priority. Thank you for your patience, -Uplinger |
