Optimizing Project workloads via CPU and Operating System Matching

Not every WCG Project is the same or even uses similar crunching methods. Some projects such as Help Conquer Cancer use code that runs more efficiently (reportedly 25%) on 64bit systems and some use features of CPU technology better that other projects. So if you have two systems, say a Vista 64bit platform with a Q9450, and a Phenom 9750 on XP 32bit (X86), you should get more results if you run the HCC project on the 64bit platform and another project(s) on the Phenom system.
So can anyone contribute to a list of projects that specifically benefit from certain operating systems (32bit or 64bit, and the system be it Vista, XP, Ubuntu, Kubuntu or other) and CPU designs (with respect to integer operations for example). I am of course assuming that Boinc/WCG don’t do this automatically with the software (allocating workunits according to system spec) and I could be incorrect in this assumption! If it is not being performed then any help towards this could up the overall work throughput.
Below is a list of current WCG projects (as of mid June 09).
If you know of any way to benefit any of these projects, post it here – thanks,

Re: Optimizing Project workloads via CPU and Operating System Matching

There are probably others, but the only problem I've seen is running the Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 application under vista/win7... I experienced about a 30% error rate like that, but virtually 0% errors from the other applications under vista/win7.

BOINC calls World Community Grid the 'project', by the way. Lots of people call the applications projects (I'm guilty of it sometimes too), but it's a bad habit in my opinion.

I was essentially talking from the point of view of processing WCG tasks, albeit with consideration to different releases of Boinc for different platforms. So I think it was OK-ish to refer to the HCC, for example, as a project - hence the "Clean Energy Project." I do however agree with you that, from the point of view of Boinc - these are sets of program tasks run by the WCG Project.

We are thinking in terms of bubbles within bubbles (subsets). Perhaps a more descriptive terminology would have helped. It might have been easier to understand if I had said “sub-project” when referring to the CEP, from the point of view of discussing Boinc, for example.

I didn't mean your question and its intent wasn't clear. And I noted you're not the only one mixing the project/application terms.

To further clarify, the data I provided on the HPF2 app errors were gathered on a dual core AMD (2.4GHz,2GB) running Win7, beta and RC. Searching the forums and asking specifically about the errors brought out that vista had similar problems with it. My other devices are currently all single core, a mix of AMD and Intel running XP Pro, and none of them had errors with that app.

Before doing an extensive survey, you might want to ask Sekerob where the data mining occurs for the images in the WCG Supplemental Performance and Project Charts thread.
(Opening that post will load 25 images!)

edit - added '25 images' caveat

Re: Optimizing Project workloads via CPU and Operating System Matching

Query directly into the public pages of WCG. One can only get a broad impression about CPU/Host/OS info at BOINCstats. That is information exported several times a day by WCG and can be picked up by anyone at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/stats/ , specifically this file: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/stats/host.gz

I prefer Science as the reference to a WCG sub-project... even WCG themselves 'helps' the misunderstanding such as here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/stat/viewProjects.do

edit: added filelink

For good order, the export file only contains the host information of those that ticked the 'show hosts' box.
