Thanks for your help so far guys. I still have had no luck in getting it to work. I'm pretty bummed out about it... I guess I wouldn't be if I knew for sure it couldn't be done.. it just seems like it should be able to work.
Most of the machines appear to be running Panda antivirus, which shouldnt affect the connecting of the software according to previous info on here. Regardless I tried to kill the software but it won't close for some reason. It says something about the process being inable to close. I'm open to anyone who has suggestions as to things I should try, tests to do, programs to run in order to find out exact what was going on. I really just wish there was something I could run to test the ports I need. I know port 80 is working through the proxy since IE works on it, but maybe it's 443 that is hanging up. Does anyone know when WCG uses port 80 and when it uses port 443? Like for initial connecting or downloading, etc. Or does it use both at the same time when connecting? Ahhhh, i just want it to work! ![]() |

Hi Snipes of Tw
I believe that it uses port 80 when you visit the WCG as a guest And I believe that it uses port 443 when sending and receiving work units to and from the IBM servers as this is a secure connection It also uses port 443 when you are logged in with your membeship name and password I believe I read somewhere that Port 443 is a ssl 128 bit encrypted secure connection to the IBM servers, with an additional layer of protection put in place by IBM for added security |

It sounds to me that the problem then is port 443 most likely. I just wish there was a way to test that port for sure. I need to figure out a way to open it up... hmm |

just as an update... i ran an online port scanner today (2 actually) and they both said that ports 80 and 443 are open. so what gives??? if they're both open then this means the firewall/proxy is NOt blocking connection right?
ahhh |

The agent software uses only port 443, via outgoing connections only, to get to server.worldcommunitygrid.org. You might want to make sure that DNS is available to the agent. This would be port 53 which would normally be open to all. If you visit the web site with your browser, the browser uses ports 80 (for http) and 443 (for https) (and 53 for DNS). If your firewalls are not causing the problem, then perhaps one of the firewalls is trying to intercept the port 443 traffic thinking it is real https protocol. If it tries to do this, it would fail, since the data protocol the agent uses over port 443 is not https.

You could use telnet to test connectivity from your problematic system.
Fire up MS telnet on your Windows box, and type "open server.worldcommunitygrid.org 443". You can at least see if your connection to the server is allowed -- if successful you get a blank screen that you can type into with no response -- gotta kill the window to exit the connection. This still won't tell you if a stateful firewall is shutting you down because you're not doing what it expects, but it will give you some info anyway... sorry that's all I could think of to help diagnose the problem. |

Thanks Cranq, this will help me narrow it down some. I'll give it a try tomorrow when I go back to work |

Ok I just tried it and.. It goes straight to a screen that says, "Press any key to continue" and so then I do and it goes back to the original screen. Under my typed command, it says "Conecting To server.worldcommunitygrid.org..." then right under that it says, "Connection to host lost..." I don't know if that means it connected, then when I hit continue it disconnected or if it never connected in the first place. Any ideas? thanks |

When you get the "connection to host lost" message, this means that the initial connection was successful. It could still be a firewall, virus protection or spyware prevention software blocking the worldcommunitygrid agent from communicating. Have you tried disabling all of these?
