Hi..
I've have 2 machines with the agent. One of them is working fine, but the other one cant run. It can connect to the server and download a small package (2400 byte). And then it just shows "agent paused". It hasn't completed a single task. I have tried to reinstall the program, but it won't work.. Any suggestions? (It's an old machine, but meets the minimum specifications. ) |

Hi Lordlous,
This is a frequent problem, though it has many causes. Here is a page about the 'Agent Paused' problem: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/cause.html In no particular order, the 3 main causes are: 1) minimum requirements not met. See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq Virtual memory can be a problem on some old systems because Rosetta needs 200 MB, and sometimes people have set a small fixed size for virtual memory and forgotten that they have a limit. 2) Security programs: See http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1804 This links to a number of threads with people working through problems. 3) Connection problems: It sounds as though you are connecting so this is probably not it. But we have several pages on this, starting at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=netconn If nothing seems to fit your problem, then tell us about your computer system, connection to the Internet and the security programs that you have running on it. (firewall and anti-virus, we do not seem to have problems with anti-spyware programs.) Glad to have you with us. There are a lot of people available to help advise you on weekends. mycrofth |

I thank you for our advise and fast reply, but it still won't work .
I use the same firewall on both machines and i have even added the ip for WCG on the one which doesn't work... I'm sure it aint firewall problems, either is it connection problems. I can give some specifications on the old machine: 266 Mhz Pentium II 64 MB sdram and 200 mB of virtual memory 2 x 2 harddisks with 2 gb each. (the primary is a FAT formation, don't know if thats could be a problem??) Win XP Pro EZ Etrust Firewall Thank's for your time! :D |

Win XP Pro EZ Etrust Firewall Lordlous -- Here are the minimum system requirements: At least a 200MHz Intel Pentiumâ„¢ processor or equivalent At least 128 MB RAM (with virtual memory enabled) 600 MB Hard Disk Drive with at least 50 MB available for use The ability to display 8-bit graphics at 800x600 resolution An Internet connection with minimum 40 kbps speed Operating System: Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP As mycrofth stated earlier, this may be found using the Help facility from the button on the bar above at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq. Your system comes up a bit short on real memory and, I would recommend about 512 MB of virtual memory as well. |

Hi Lordlous,
So your computer does not have enough RAM to run Rosetta? There are still possibilities. If you look at http://www.grid.org/about/ you will see that they are running a project for Cancer Research for Oxford that runs quite well on a P II computer. And grid.org uses a version of UD.EXE very similar to the WCG, so there is no learning curve. Just download and register. Merry Crunching, mycrofth |

Maybe i should do so..
I found an interesting thread on the forum: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=1845 It is describing exactly my problem.... The only thing which is different, is that my CPU is 266 Mhz... So....It should work...but it doesn't. |

Lordlous,
Your computer has 64 MB RAM. The minimum size of memory to run the Rosetta program for the Human Proteome Folding project is 128 MB. Even if you had more memory, a really long work unit might take too long to complete since there is a 2 week time limit. Which is why I recommend using that computer for projects with shorter work units. unfortunately, we currently have just one project, but grid.org has a cancer project that runs faster than HPF. mycrofth |

At WorldCommunityGrid we tuned our work units to average shorter times, a few months back, so that has helped for slower machines. However, your machine does not meet the minimum requirements for memory. Also, your virtual memory maximum would have to be larger as well. Rosetta allocates about 200MB of virtual memory, even thought the working set size is typically only 25MB. A good rule of thumb is to add at least 200MB to the maximum virtual memory size (paging/swap file size) you already run with.

I thank everyone of you for your fast and good respons.
----------------------------------------The machine can't join WCG, but I managed to make it run on grid.org's program, which works pretty well. So...That's what it'll be doing for a while.....Crunching, Crunching and.....Crunching . I am very impressed of the way this forum works and the good service we "crunchers" get. So...keep up the good work out there.......You're doing a great job And just remember... (") Keep crunching (") Lordlous [Edit 2 times, last edit by Lordlous at Apr 25, 2005 6:02:16 PM] |
