Does anybody know if you throttle BOINC down if it also throttles GPU down, and if there is a way to separate the two and only throttle down the cpu if not? No. You can set BOINC to use a percentage of CPU but since the card uses so little CPU I've not seen any affect on the card. I run my main machine @ 75% and see no affect on its card. I guess you can underclock your GPU if you want to slow it down but I've never tried that. Maybe Blizzie would know. Actually, I want my graphics to stay on, but limit the CPU (seems to produce more heat). I've tried that and it did not appear to reduce the heat that much. I ran one machine with one GPU wu and no CPU wu's running. I didn't see much difference. The CPU temp drops 10-15C but not nearly as much as I expected. Even running idle (no CPU or GPU wu's) it still produces a lot of heat. The problem is neither the CPU or GPU is very efficient. If it's on ... it produces a lot of heat. If you want to try it go to the advanced tab > preferences > processor usage tab and set the CPU usage to whatever percentage you want. I tried this on the one machine I have in my office so it would not be affected by the 8 machines in the server room. I didn't think it made much difference in room temp. But as the saying goes "results may vary". ![]() Here's these tools: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=25092 They could be of some use, anyway... Yes, those are all good things to use but I have not found them to be affective in reducing the room temp. (I think that is Jonathan's objective.) You live in the high desert and I'm sure you know what I mean. When it is 105F+ outside and the sun is baking down, there is just no where to put the heat. I get into a feedback loop where the machines heat up the air, sucks it back in and heats it up some more. I refuse to use even more electricity to run the AC just to cool the machines. Even my AC has the same problem as it is a heat pump. When the outside temp is above about 95F it is terribly inefficient as it has the same problem ... there is no place to put the heat. Your swamp cooler probably works better than my AC as they work great in low humidity. I have a portable one in my office. It works great but I have to fill it with water every two hours. Over the years I have tried everything I can think of ... big high-volume floor fans work the best for the machines but do nothing to reduce the house temp. The only solution I have found for the summer is just turm most of them off until I can get down to a reasonable room temp. Well ... that's just my experience. Speaking of that, I am now down to my summer config ... 3 machines with 10 cores split between WCG and YoYo. I hate it already!!! I'm running IADS and CEP here and Evo and Muon at YoYo. I'm running 3 cards for now by increasing the queue size at GPUGrid and aborting all the HIV wu's. That eliminates the wu's that error out. That works for now but would be too cumbersome to do with all nine cards. They don't seem to be any closer over there in fixing their problem. ![]() ![]() |

Joyful day here! I went to a convenience store that opened up 4 blocks from here. This is the first time I have been in any store in about 2 years and the first time I have been to one under my own power since before my amputation in August of 2006! I did manage to get to a newly opened pub also close by a couple weeks ago.
Hmmm -- ought to go up to the pub this afternoon! Yep -- off to have a couple (temp here is 78 -- delightful day!) |

Funny it is called Carriage Return like we are still using typewriters Or teletypes ... - D I might be showing my age, but when you typed on a teletype, when you got to the end of each line, you needed to go "around the horn" with your right little finger to hit the "Line Feed" "Carriage Return" and "Break" buttons to start typing on the next line. I hope I got that right as that was in 1970 that I last used one. Cheers

Some (most?) systems that echoed input would insert the LF for you when you typed in a CR. At least one system I used allowed you to decide whether you wanted this or not when you logged on. - D |

Since we are taking a trip down memory lane, let's never forget the IBM punch card Cut my teeth on them. The 80 byte standard.
