I dont agree either. We are here to crunch projects and one WU is equally as valuable as any other WU.

I don't agree on that, there are also a lot of Linux Beta WU's but not for this CMD2 project now, probably the project will be released for Windows first and later on for Linux. This was also the case for CEP and there I also got a lot of Linux WU's later on just before the Linux part of CEP was released.

Not to worry. Doubt WCG will ever create different tiers for different platforms.

As for this one, why would WCG in first beta do all platforms? Testing the main platform, 1st round of discovery flushes out the biggest errors that are to apply to all platforms, so why manage 3 tests? As the announcement post is clear, to me at least, a Linux (and Mac) beta will follow. Does not need explicit statement.

But, why are we talking badges again in a technical beta test support thread?

Curiously, the second Beta8 uses same version 6.08, seemingly no code change, but now per knreed have quorums of only AMD or only Intel cpu driven clients. Got 4 and set the client not to talk to the servers for the next 18 hours smug

Re: BETA 8, version 6.08, April 15, 2008, virii ?

After tweaking my settings per the how-to post back towards the beginning of this thread, a couple of my computers (1 P4; 1 Athlon XP) got beta WUs today... the P4 even got another beta WU when the first one finished, but then NAV 2009 decided the second one was a virus and promptly removed it.

I'm thinking we probably don't get any credits for reporting problems like this. tongue

Doubt WCG will ever create different tiers for different platforms.
Cast your doubts aside: Beta with very small number of work units (Windows only) (knreed)

The protocol will need to include ongoing occasional cross-checking of same WUs crunched on Intel and AMD to check that both architectures continue to give acceptably similar results.

Small variations between results from different CPU architectures has been given as the reason that WCG science programs do not use the extended multimedia instructions (MMX, SSE etc) of the x86 CPUs. Perhaps the new beta program uses some of these instructions.
If WCG successfully separates AMD and Intel CPUs into subprojects in this case, it may open the possibility of using the extended instructions to speed up other projects. If this gave significant gains, it might be a much more productive move than using graphics cards for calculations (GPGPU/CUDA etc), because only a minority of members would choose to buy and feed suitable graphics cards, while most if not all x86 devices can already execute mm instructions.

OK, so I restored it from quarantine and excluded the 'slots' folder from further scanning... any way to get BOINC to recognize it now?

Or is that just some reciept-type file sent for the finished beta WU?
confused

When was it removed and from where?
If it is after successfully downloading and before Boinc tries to start it you have a chance by putting the file back where it should be, i.e. in \projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org in your Boinc Data directory, not in a slot directory. The slots directories are used by running applications.

If Boinc detected the failure this WU is probably lost. Check your Results Status page to see if this WU is there and with which status.

Cheers. Jean.

No idea what the relevance is of my badge comment with a technical issue, but allah, the ozzie mind wanders in the outback. tired

Are Beta CMD2 WU's planned for Linux as well? I only have one machine running Windows so my Beta chances are slim with this test. Other than Beta, this is the only project that I have crunch time invested without a badge yet

We are running the application for Linux and Mac in alpha now. We will be starting another beta tomorrow that will include all three platforms.
