A High number of different projects

I am a bit worried about the high number of different projects that we are crunching nowadays. When we were just focusing on 4 or 5 projects, we were able to produce a high number of years per day for them but now that we are crunching 7, we just do a few years per day for each one. I am just thinking that if we have less projects, we could finish them faster and them, get a new one.

Re: A High number of different projects

I respectfully disagree with you.
The point is not finishing them faster; the science behind it's taking a lot of time also. So if you will be finishing a project, let's say in one day, the scientist will still take a lot of time sorting the results and interpret them. We can do other project while the scientist are slowly sorting and interpreting they're finished results.

It will be worse for science to wait on each project to finish so we can start another one. As a parallel, that's why Intel philosophy about switching from NetBurst Architecture to Parallel Cores (Core Duo and Quad) was more efficient: because other things than actual processing take time also and in the mean time, you can do something else or more.

I think we can even get more projects. Still, there is a question of limited resources at some point and something must be done ad PR level to increase WCG members#. But that is another discussion .... smile

Re: A High number of different projects

I don't think, that this a point to worry about. Even though the relaunch of HCMD is planned for april/may, and we will then have in total 8 projects to crunch, if you regard the smaller projects like NRW (will be finished arround september) and DDDT (will be finished in about 1 year), the number of projects in total decreases again to 6. Also the "total capacity" of WCG in increasing continously, so din't worry, I am sure, that everything it going pretty well... smile

Cheers
Totto

Re: A High number of different projects

I don't think so.

An important information that need be known is that when a new project come up, a lot of new crunchers join to WCG by advertisiment of the new community engaged on science, and I saw some information about this increase of crunchers in SEK's graphs... take a look at...

Re: A High number of different projects

I did see somewhere in the Forum, that they're hoping to have 10 projects up and running later this year... as to how/what and as to whether this is true or not, I don't know...

What I can guess though, is that there's HCMD2 and DDD-T2 in the not too distant future, and, I'm also guessing that there'll also be another phase/continuation of AC@H - as the project hasn't been "completed" off yet...

So, plenty to do, and more volunteer crunchers will never go amis biggrin

The more the better. Different projects will attract people with different reasons for crunching. Bring 'em on! biggrin

I am just thinking that if we have less projects, we could finish them faster and them, get a new one.

Don't forget that at the current speed we already have 2 projects (Rice and DDDT) which have to run more slowly in order to not submerge their labs with too many results.

10 is indeed the number of different projects which might be offered at the same time later this year (if we have not finished the smallest ones too fast smile ).

Cheers. Jean.

Hmmm. That would infer that that 10th project needs to be started before NRW finishes, otherwise the new project would be #9. smile

Re: A High number of different projects

The public secret is:

HCMD 2
DDDT 2
CEP 2

Not informed when latter two start exactly.

NRW (see RICE news thread for some uplifting words) has slowed again so it's slipped back to September. It will slide further to October at present rate and the Spring Break (has that started already ?) and Summer recession when schools are out through mid September.

Re: A High number of different projects

I believe that this is one of the many advantages WCG has over most other projects.(variety being the spice of life etc). Community activity on the forums and bringing new crunchers into the fold as mentioned are examples. IMHO crunching for a variety of science disciplines under 'one roof' is an ideal way to learn something new. Arguably, BOINC can to do this as well but not every stand alone project has the technical skills that the WCG techs bring to the table. IMHO WCG has it all ie. variety and competence...cheerssmile
