Re: A High number of different projects

I also agree. As stated before, bringing new projects online attracts new crunchers for that cause. Then, hopefully, when whatever project that attracted them to WCG completes they will decide to stick around and crunch other projects offered by WCG.

I only see more projects as a win-win for us (WCG).

That's the right approach. I agree that one oplace for multiple projects have a lot of advantages compared with alone projects or just fews.

I have crunched grid computing projects since GIMPS started in 1996, and have crunched a lot of alone projects since that time.

Today I really know that have advantages in a single infrastructure like BOINC, and in long term the speed up of learning curve for new projects in a single structure like WCG.

It bring us with better support team, huge knowledge of problems and issues among crunchers, easy ways to replicate experiences when will launch new projects, more awareness of many projects in distinct areas (diversity), reduced costs to keep only one structure for crunchers, more willingness to sponsorships and partnerships, and mainly the real commitment with long term (probably someone there will remeber what happens with grid.org due the United Devices give up of sponsorship and commitments).

And the last but not least, we ever could check or uncheck any project from our preferences, to keep focus in specifics or be more generalist. wink

Re: A High number of different projects

I am a bit worried about the high number of different projects that we are crunching nowadays. When we were just focusing on 4 or 5 projects, we were able to produce a high number of years per day for them but now that we are crunching 7, we just do a few years per day for each one. I am just thinking that if we have less projects, we could finish them faster and them, get a new one.

Running fewer projects would certainly be easier for the support team.

However, if we run fewer projects, we would have to turn some of the researchers away. And that would be a tough decision to make. Should we not have started the Clean Energy Project or the Help Fight Childhood Cancer project because we already had five projects running? I don't think so.

But thanks for asking.
