Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition

Hi,

I am currently using the Free Ad-Aware 2008, which works fine.

I have started getting prompts from it though to upgrade to Ad Aware Anniversary Edition. (If I do I will stick with the free version.) However, when I look here:

http://www.lavasoft.com/download_and_buy/product_comparison_chart.php

This shows there it comes with Ad Watch live basic. Which when you mouse-over it, says: "Real-time process protection blocks malicious processes and infected programs that try to start or run on your system."

My concern with this is that it will be running all the time in memory and slow my CPU down with less CPU cycles going towards crunching. sad

Does anyone have experience of this, and is this an 'upgrade' that I should avoid?

Thanks for your help.

Peter.

Re: Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition

The aawservice.exe is always running on my laptop. Never noticed it interfering, but will unload as it keeps crashing RICE jobs on the first disk write try from start. Similar it's not advised to run TeaTimer that comes with Spybot Search & Destroy.

As for upgrading, first read what folks say about it. I've seen upgrades with features being removed, having been added to the paid-for version.

Thanks for the replies. smile

I had problems with Tea Timer and wanted to avoid a similar thing with the new Ad Aware software, which is what prompted the question.

I think I will risk it!

Re: Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition

The free AD Aware security and other free software only use definition search reactive programing. Another words they look for viruses and spyware that are known. The payed new versions of Of Ad Aware as well as other payed security programs Kadpersky, Trend, Norton 2009 and node32 are using what is called Behavior based Hueristic programs as well as definition based. Behavior based means it watches your computer files and if they do something out of the ordinary they block and quarantine them preventing possible virus infection which means it is proactive not reactive like the old programs.
I have used All of the new security suites mentioned above except Ad Aware testing them out they work very efficient at least on my PC they hardly are noticed and less resources then the older version software.
My PC is a Q6600 4GB 64Bit Vista.

I have Tea Timer running and task manager shows it only used 25 seconds of cpu time over the last 14 hours. Hardly even know it is there.

Cheers

I use the ad aware anniversary edition pro (the paid version) works good, does not use much resources I have not had any issues with using behaviour based heuristic with any program including WCG
