New Computer

I recently got a new computer and I haven't been returning results because:
A)it slows down my computer too much
and
B) I'm afraid of overusing my CPU and burning it out. Any suggestions on how to adjust the settings so I can still return results while not using too much of my personal computing power?

Re: New Computer

A) From BOINC Settings, uncheck box Computing allowed "While computer is in use"

B) Download Speedfan to check all your relevant computer temperatures. And to Boinc Settings, type Use at most (for example) 80 % of CPU time.

It is very unlikely that you burn any part of your computer without some overclocking smile

Re: New Computer

I have a computer doing this crunching job for almost 2 years 24/7 and no sign of burning. Also, BOINC uses the SURPLUS of CPU cycles you have. It does not interfere with your daily use.

Re: New Computer

Hello,
I do not know how long you use your computer per day.

If you use it only for relatively short times per day,
I would suggest that you might choose the
SHA-1 Collision Search Graz
projekt.

The typical thing for this project is
that is sends relativly little portions of work - compared with other projects.
This means that one piece of work takes relatively little time
(About 2 hours, but if you have a new computer, mabe even less time)
per piece of work.
One piece comes to an end quickly, and you can in this way succesfully take part
in this project, even if you use your computer only for short periods of time
I wish succesfull crunching

Unless you would rather find a cure for Aids or Cancer by sticking with WCG.

Re: New Computer

Ad new computer:

I have a question. If I install BOINC on a new computer with my account, it will "add one" into the total of Device installations - I have total of 7 now although I run BOINC on one computer now - this is my third computer plus some reinstalls happened and after the last reinstal I realized that although my new computer is better that the previous one, the average credit dropped down... is it because of dividing the gained credit by number of "computers that have installed BOINC with this account" regardless of the computers do not exist anymore or BOINC was uninstalled from them or reinstalled on them? Or the "Devices installations" have nothing to do with the drop of average credit?

Re: New Computer

Hello Czech Zidane,
"Devices installations" have nothing to do with the drop of average credit?

Better give us a lot more information about your credit. Ordinarily, each new computer will earn more credit per day, so your long-term average will rise as you get new computers, even though your average will be less than the daily average for your newest computer.

Re: New Computer

Hi Czech Zidane!
The number of devices has no effect on any average that you can see from the My Grid page.
What has an effect for sure is that, according to WCG's stats, you have not returned a result since 16/02/09 18:40:55?!? And your last validated WU was on February 20.
You might look at your Results Status page and at BoincMgr's advanced view to see what's going on.
Don't hesitate to tell us what you find with details if you need our help for solving this situation.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: New Computer

I know about the "last result returned" on 02/16. Then my computer crashed and it was non-functional until this Monday. I brought it into the company I have it from, they tested everything that they thought might cause problems and after the tests they gave me a new HDD into the computer, because they thought that the HDD was the one part causing problems. So I hope my crunching will speed up again, I saw the "dropping credit problem" maybe from October - I had average about 250 I think and this year I had average about 150 or something... anyway thanks for the advice, I am glad that number of devices installed does not affect the average credit and I hope my average credit will rise up again :)
