Hello,
I am sorry, that I have to open a new thread for this topic. I know and I am sure, that someone has already asked this question, but I simly could not find the information BOIC informed me in the messages, that a new version is available for my computer. I visited the berkley.edu site and downloaded the .sh file properly. Then I found out, that I have to make the .sh file executable using the umbuntu command sudo sh *filename* Unfortunately, my computer does not install the new version. Can anyone help me? Must I uninstall the old client to install a new one or not? Why is the newest version only availble as .sh file on the berkley site, and not on the grid homepage itself? If I choose download agent again on the worldcommunity site itself, an old version is offered. Why? Thanks. |

Hi,
----------------------------------------What version have you got and how did you get it on before? Package Manager? If 6.2.x, stick with it. Berkeley sends updates notices every new moon, 6.4, an orphan and 6.6 still full in development.

From a previous post:
----------------------------------------If you wish to only get notification of WCG endorsed releases add below lines to the cc_config.xml file, <options> section. Also your client will check with ibm if the internet in general is up if WCG is uncontactible and not with google. <options> <client_version_check_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.ph...ent_version_check_url> <client_download_url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/download.php</client_download_url. <network_test_url>http://www.ibm.com/</network_test_url> </options> Sekerob - I've made the assumption that this also applies to Linux? |

You can rest assured that if WCG updates their customized Windows package, they'll also update the download page to tell of a new recommended Linux / Mac release.
----------------------------------------Thanks for x-posting those added cc_config.xml lines for those who only like to know of the "endorsed and tested" stuff.

Don't upgrade. Use the version of boinc that that is in the Ubuntu repository.
Ubuntu 8.04 is using 5.10.45 and ubuntu 8.11 is using 6.2.12. You will have less headaches if you stay with these versions. |

Hello,
thank you for your information I have got version 5.10.45 I can stick to this version, but to me it seems quite old. A good step by step update instruction for linux, that is what I would highly appreciate. But do not worry and take your time, I will for sure go on crunching. BOINC is simply a very genious way of doing science I is a big pity, that news and information seldomly find a way into printing (paper) media like newspapers, though. Sometimes it seems to me, that there are two worlds electronic world paper world When will they meet? But maybe there have been articles about BOINC in US press and I simply did not take notice In German newspapers, however, I have never ever encoutered an article ablout BOIC. I regret this. Yours Kafejka |
