Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 33 smilesmile

w00t

Chris Brown is cranking out some SETI for MOT. peace

GPU crunchers are lookin' good too. wink

That just reminded me to resume SETI crunching..

As for GPU crunching.. I have a couple of queries (as a potential new recruit), does the temperature of the GPU rise much when crunching compared to idle use (I presently have an ASUS EN9800GT Ultimate if thats much use?) Is the crunching noticable on graphics performance (mainly when mixed with movies or games), and I'm certain you've all mentioned it before.. but you GPU crunchers, what card(s) are in your arsenal?

Also, what card would you's recommend for around or under $150 USD and being good value for crunching power (without overclocking) based on your experiences?? Keeping it in mind it will be in a 24/7 server and likely won't be used for anything but crunching and providing visual access to server 2008.

Yes, the cards run hot. Depending on how much airflow you have, they can run from 60C to 80C. I have one that consistently runs above 75C. Runs fine at that temp.

I have 5 EVGA 9800GT's and 1 EVGA 8800GT. I see no performance difference between the 88 and the 98's

You can get a 9800GT for between $100-125 ... sometimes less on sale.

The last machine tested out OK and now I am just waiting for the PS's to arrive next week.

Psh. Dataman doesn't want to get owned in BOINC credits. He likes his WCG victory. biggrin

Ha! I'll whip your sorry @$$ at any project. laughing biggrin

I'm going to be moving back to AQUA soon I hope. They had the same experience CEP did. They had so many crunchers that it overwhelmed the project scientists and they severly reduced the amount of work released. biggrin If not, I'm going to YoYo and improve my German some more.

RT, while going to a "Top Twenty" will actually cover about half of the folks returning results that day, I think it's a good idea. You like to see some regular variation so there's a chance the reader could see themselves there. Think I got things updated without any typos so I edited today's list for this. What do folks think?

Great we can see some of the folks who contribute

I have a 260 GTX oced to 681 - 1050 - 1464. It runs at 45C because my case has awesome cooling. The temps you see are mostly dependent on your cooling rig. DM is right that graphics cards can run hotter, some up to 80C. Even when the fan on my 8800GT broke, it was able to keep the card under 65C under BOINC!

260 GTX is best bang for buck these days. Check new egg. Their MSI 260 GTX for $150 ships for free. I love it.

As far as impact on performance, I run Left 4 Dead at 60 fps (i turn off antialiasing and some other advanced tweaks) while running Boinc at 100%. I see no difference. Really advanced games like Bioshock and Crysis and Far Cry 2 will not be able to run well with BOINC also running, so you're going to have to shut down GPU grid while you play these seriously graphically intensive games.

That is impressive. None of mine get down to 45C even when they are doing nothing. sad

EDIT: PS I may reach 7 million credits today. biggrin

I have two 8800's coming my way and I think I'm going to put them into two computers I have running WCG. They barely do much as they are fairly underpowered for CPU crunchers, but they may be able to do some good at GPU crunching.

Plus, I have my weather station running WCG and it affects its performance at times. I'd rather have it doing GPU crunching.

When the cards do get here, I'm going to have questions on how to set them up, connecting the WU's to our team, etc... Any references on it would be greatly appreciated. smile

Super smart decision. These will start smoking your faster pcs immediately! I have one of these and I think Blizzie also had one. Set up is a dream. Everything you need to know is here: http://www.gpugrid.net/join.php?sys=gpu if you have questions, post em here and Blizzie or I or DM or anyone else who knows the 8800GT can help.

I had the same problem. I use Ambient Weather software on a C2D duo. Ambient Weather is a huge memory hog!! That affects crunching and also causes my connection to Weather Undgerground to drop in rare cases. I had to drop BOINC to 80% of cores to get them to play nicely together. On the other hand, the card on that machine does fine using minimal core.

What weather software are you using?
