Yup, I have lost all illusions about the fairness and honesty of both big business and certainly Government. I have always said that out Government sucks but it is better than any known alternative. I begin to wonder at times. I worked inside the corporate offices of one of the largest corporations in the world for quite a few years. Despite the rhetoric, people are merely replaceable parts that are dispensable as necessary or desired. The layoff of my son is just another in a very long list of examples of that. Fortunately, this one has been the closest to home so far. That was a bummer comment. As the old Irish saying goes “Hooray Anyway “ ![]() These days it seems that this is what has to pass for good news since the bad news seems to be really bad. I've never been a fan of lots of government regulation but lately, it seems clear that we can trust Wall Street and the corporate boardrooms about as much as our politicans in Washington. Still, having Washington regulate big business looks an awful lot like having the fox guard the henhouse. Maybe more appropriately it's like having the prisoners at Supermax guard themselves. Far too many companies see their employees as commodities, an expense to be managed and cut. A company that sees employees as human beings is an anachronism now. The past couple of years has really soured me on corporate management. Both of your comments are interesting. I think we need to be careful not to collectively tar all corporations or government entities with the same brush. I have worked in both private enterprise and government service. There are both scoundrels and great people working in both. Root out the scoundrels and encourage the great people to make their respective enterprises better. Thanks for the opportunity to comment. Cheers You're right of course but I truly am a lot more inclined to view execs of very large companies much as I do elected officials in Washington these days than I did a year or two ago. The environment in Washington has become so politicized that it's all about power these days. Public service is a thing of days gone by. When was the last time you heard an elected official in Washingtion referred to as a public servant and not as a politician? If it was pu blic service that mattered to them, you'd hear a LOT less references to Democract or Republican. On Wall Street and in the corporate boardrooms, it's easy to refer to the problem there as out and out greed. Truth is that it is more like a myopic focus on the short-term bottom line. Wall Street came up with all kinds of "financial instruments" - the ones you hear a lot about these days, particularly with AIG. Bottom line was they were a way to make a buck. They probably started out as creative ways to reduce risk but with the over-focus on making a buck, they ignored the risks that came along with them, overly discounted those risks or failed to regularly review those risks (didn't Goldman Sachs do just that and got out in time to save their hineys?). The focus is so strong because institutional funds and money managers are so quick to slam a company's management if they fail to squeeze enough blood out of us turnips every three months. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that when you get promoted into the executive ranks of most companies, the first step of your indoctrination is having your backbone removed. Yes, there are good companies out there without that myopic focus on the bottom line. In terms of the very large companies, I think you'll find that they tend to rank highly on the "Most Admired" lists but do not do near as well on the "500" type lists. It seems that these days, the belief that if you treat your employees as human beings and as equals that are valued and respected, and that in doing so, they will do and make sure you know what needs to be done to succeed - the bottom line gets taken care of as do shareholders, requires a repudiation of so much that is considered sancrosanct by business executives these days (and a backbone too). We're guilty too though. If someone walked up to you and gave you a bag containing 10,000 dollars, you'd be nervous and suspicious (whether you keep it or not). Change that to a pre-approved credit card offer and you get a completely different reaction. We get offered a low introductory rate on a mortgage with no proof of income and took it. Sure, we all want to get ahead, better ourselves but we got offered lots of creatively packaged bags of money and we took them. (Yes, when I point a finger at someone, I know I have three pointing back at me.) We clearly have plenty of blame to go around lately. |

I think you'll find us guys behaved ourselves reasonably well in your absence. You won't find much in the way of the forum-equivalent of us belching, farting or scratching ourselves and very few socks on the floor. ![]() |
