Good Morning!
----------------------------------------Seems like one more pleasant day is coming up - rifts in the clouds, no twigs moving on the birches, cool after a below zero night. don den, one will be amazed by the way our forefathers conditioned us. 24th of February does happen each year, but only every fourth - I know the arithmetic is more complicated than that - is it followed by a February 29th. It's a logic worthy of a woman!!! Wikipedea to the rescue: Folk traditions In Britain and Ireland, it is a tradition that women may propose marriage only on leap years ..... ..... fines be levied if a marriage proposal was refused by the man; compensation was deemed to be a pair of leather gloves, a single rose, £1 and a kiss. In some places the tradition was tightened to restricting female proposals to the modern leap day, February 29, or to the medieval (bissextile) leap day, February 24. In Denmark, the tradition is that women may propose on the bissextile leap day, February 29, and that refusal must be compensated with 12 pairs of gloves. [- and here Wikipedia messes up royally by stating the bissextile leap day as February 29, it is indeed February 24 as we see above in the chapter about England and Ireland!!!] In Finland, the tradition is that if a man refuses a woman's proposal on leap day, he should buy her the fabrics for a skirt. In Greece, marriage in a leap year is considered unlucky. One in five engaged couples in Greece will plan to avoid getting married in a leap year. [- but then again nobody can afford anything in Greece any more ...] Of special interest to you, don den, men's refusals are discounted in Norway. They must only give 10 pairs of gloves. Go figure - it's much colder there ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 4, 2012 5:18:58 PM] |

Yes, Scribe
I was with New England until I discovered I had talked the sun black here - therefore I felt I better drop a couple of WUs to legalise all that chatter |
