When will WCG support GPU processing?

I have two 9800GTX's sitting idle mostly - I know FAH has one but I would much prefer to do everything in the one house (WCG).

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

Hi Mont,

There are 584 posts this moment with the word GPU in it on the forums:

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...=&forum=0&rows=50

We don't know if WCG will implement any GPU / CUDA project. Depends on a stable client, depends on a science that is suited for porting and on money.

cheers

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

Hi Mont,
Barcelona is running a CUDA project on BOINC at http://www.gpugrid.net/

Dataman and some other members of My Online Team have been contributing. There is a project that is interested in considering CUDA, but it is too early to say whether or not they will get a working program running. If they do, WCG will seriously consider supporting it.

There is just not anything definite that we can say at this point.

Lawrence

Additonally to Barcelona mentioned, you will find a great option to use your GPU with CUDA under BOINC (using the latest client and driver available) if you have willingness to crunch SETI project work units.

By far very fanny, very fast, very smooth and very easy to run, once all happens automatically after you install trhe right client with the right driver for your GPU.... Until now, from my side, no problems. cool

Just to have a parameter to your comparison, I have one machine running SETI enhanced 6.08 (CUDA) with a GPU 9600 GT OC that have an incredible average performance of one WU crunched each 2.2 minutes of processor time (and teh good news here is that I alocated BOINC client to use just 0.06% of one of my quad processors in my BOINC arrangement for this machine once the rest of processors time are allocated exclusively to WCG WU's) if I pick my last week performance. devilish

This machine is a good Intel Extreme QUAD QX 9770 3.2 GHz with 4 GB RAM Windows Vista 32. Many WU's did not pass of 1.5 minutes of processor time... biggrin

I will be burned in the hell fire by many WCGer's that will read it, but from my point of view SETI found a great and innovative way to provide right usage of GPU/CUDA under BOINC agents, in a very fanny and very smooth arrangement, compared with any other grid computing project on the place until now ! applause

Up to you ! Good crunch ! good luck coffee

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

Hi Mont

Until WCG has a GPU project, gpugrid is a good alternative as Lawrence suggested. Don't keep those good cards idle. biggrin If you need any help getting started, try their forum here. There are a lot of experienced people willing to help you.

Cheers!

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

For those of not interested in doing alpha test or beta test work, could you make it clear whether GPUGRID requires any alpha test or beta test programs when using the GPU under BOINC?

They have 3 science projects. You can read about them here

You can get the recommended BOINC client and CUDA driver by following the links here

Cheers!

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

Just a note of caution of what GPU crunchers are exposed to: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3635&nowrap=true#23036
Seti_Enhanced (also called Multibeam or MB) runs on the CPU (normal, mostly app 6.03) as well as on the GPU (called CUDA, app 6.08). The normal application, 6.03, does have graphics, but the new 6.08 application does not.

When it's running on the GPU, it is saturating this GPU. Anything else that you then run on the GPU, including graphics/screen saver, will slow the calculations down and increase the change for errors. So in the infinite wisdom, the Seti developers decided not to add the graphics application to 6.08, not even when it falls back to the CPU.

What I see coming is that like the new project option per default being off, the GPU option will also be. Don't want volunteers that are less skilled in computer poking to be taken off guard.

Re: When will WCG support GPU processing?

Well now, add my personal experience with GPU processing through new Google Earth 5.0. The CPU stays cooler than normal because within seconds of loading GE will the GPU temp shoot up 10 to 12 C and cause all the system fans to go bananas. Mind you, this is just a 8300 card they somehow are employing so wonder what GE 5.0 does for the GPUGrid testers?
