Anyone on a Mac tested this one out yet? I am curious about it but I don't want to jump into something that doesn't work well or is very well supported by WCG.
Just curious about people's experience/experiments. Thanks! Jamie |

I only recommend you to use alpha clients, if you are also a BOINC alpha tester. There are very often bugs in the alpha clients which would be fixed within the alpha development process.

Thought 6.5.x were alpha's, the uneven minor, but yes, following the developers forum, it sure reads as having a serious alpha feel to it.

Since you *do* ask, I have found it necessary to return to 6.6.3. I have tested 6.6.4 both on PPC and Intel, and Boinc suddenly refused to fetch new WCG units for my one week queues. Only WCG, worked OK with Rosetta as far as I observed. With 6.6.3 I only have the "usual" problems (no graphics, bad time estimates...)

Hi ramotsol!
----------------------------------------From your post I understand that you run Boinc in this machine with a 7-day long extra work buffer. This is about the maximum that one can ever get for WCG. Therefore if it happens that a given task is lasting, say, 20 % longer than estimated by Boinc, when Boinc will adjust the estimated duration of each pending job by +20 % the size of the queue will become something like 8.4 days and Boinc will not fetch any new work during 1.4 day, whatever you do. Anyway, with such a huge buffer your machine should never become idle unless you connect to WCG only once a week, maybe. Cheers. Jean. |

Jean, 6.6.x has serious work-fetch issues. They have made major changes to the scheduler, and even small changes have huge and unexpected consequences.
Sekerob, 6.6.x is alpha, really. They pushed it to beta quickly out of some idea that it had already been tested in the 6.3 branch, but obviously that was purely wishful thinking. |

Didactylos,
----------------------------------------I was not trying to hide or even minimize 6.6.x glitches, I was only warning ramotsol that with such a big extra work buffer he would risk such problems even with a stable release and that whatever work fetching problems he can see will not be much helpful for debugging any lousy release. Cheers. Jean. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Feb 11, 2009 4:36:52 AM] |

Hi ramotsol! From your post I understand that you run Boinc in this machine with a 7-day long extra work buffer. .... Anyway, with such a huge buffer your machine should never become idle unless you connect to WCG only once a week, maybe. Cheers. Jean. Which is indeed the case with the computer in question. Both my computers travel a lot and have to adjust to this situation. But as long as I can fetch work the rest is minor problems that can be handled. I assume that in the 6.6.4 case the Boinc manager does not properly deal with projects indebted to each other - pure speculation of course. And why is he using the betas in the first place? Well, some new functions have proved valuable (for instance the "Properties" buttons). And I confess I am curious to observe how long it takes to solve the various documented Boinc problems - and the new problems created in the process. So as long as my cruching is valid... |
