Is there anyway that the BOINC agent install file can be written so that you can install it on a computer in which you do not have adminstator access. I read on the internet that this is possible however developers usually do not write for this because most people can be the adminstrator if they want. I have a work computer that has to run 24/7 in which I do not have adminstrator access. I know running the agent is not going to hurt the computer but I have to convince my buisness's admin that it wont. I rather not.
Thanks Trey |

As with all software, you need Admin access to install the software, whether it is Microsoft Office or Adobe Reader. My understanding is that there is no way around that, since Limited users cannot install software (under Windows).

Thanks Trey Hey Verlin003, I strong suggest that you use this fact (ADM access control), to prepare a good explanation or presentation about WCG project and objectives, and try to present it for the people that make the decisions in subjects like policies,. IT rules and other safeguards. You can use the approach of add value to your company in the way that the company could use the iddle time of it computers (you can show one or more machines that could be applied for it in your company) to help the world via WCG projects. It make sense and maybe the HR team will take attention to you more than IT team... it really could help you on your personal objective to use iddle time of this machines... and could really add value to your company (You can invite your company to participate officially of WCG projects as a official partner just to install BOINC agents in it machines, there are many partners that sign agreements with WCG to do it...). Additionally, you can try convice your IT administrator to install WCG in all machines in a fair way, just demonstranting the WCG objctives and purposes... It could be a hard to get, but greatful if get ! And sincerally you can leverage a lot of your participation in WCG if you get it... (maybe part of your approach strategy to make your company a partner of WCG, will pass to create a company team to shown and build strong results day by day to shown to all employees that participating in this project... and be sure that the head of HR team constantly love this kind of approaches to join people around a single objective, and aorund somethiong that will be greatful for all and that leverage the company image... WCG policies (under IBM sponsorship), could certainly help you to conquest it, just be criative and innovative in the right measure of your comopany to break this barrier and get it ! ). Good luck, and ask for help about WCG if you will need ! ![]()

As with all software, you need Admin access to install the software, whether it is Microsoft Office or Adobe Reader. My understanding is that there is no way around that, since Limited users cannot install software (under Windows). Please see this quote from this website... But that’s not the real reason applications need admin privileges to install—the real reason is that developers are generally too lazy to bother creating Setup or Windows Installer packages that will work under non-admin privileges. This is because doing so involves going through a number of hoops as a developer, and that means extra work (which most developers want to avoid). But it also means developing these apps while running under non-admin privileges yourself, and again that involves lots of bother so most developers don’t bother—it’s much easier to develop an application if you are logged on as Administrator, so most apps are de facto designed to run under admin privileges as well. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tut...r-Non-Admin-Accounts.html |

BOINC downloads and runs software from the Internet, so as a security feature, it has to create limited accounts and run as a service. This can't be done without Administrator rights.
You are right in general, of course. |
