Hi BarneyBadass,
WCG is a not a charitable organization, as defined by the IRS. It does not accept money or other valuables for charitable purposes. Lawrence |

lawrencehardin,
I agree, not in the traditional sense. We do contribute our systems (I know we can't claim a donation on the cpu time as much as many of us would like) and we can't depreciate the cost of our systems & software, but there is electricity which could be obtained if WCG could become a qualified charitable organization. It's not going to stop me from participating either way. Considering our government keeps clammering about donating.... then we should be able to get some of our cost back. If you drove from the state of Maine to New Orleans, La to help clean up the mess from the hurricanes, you would be able to deduct that mileage. Now if you worked in construction and your hourly rate is 100 / hr; and you donated say 1000 hrs of your time; you can't write that off, but the mileage both ways is deductible. To that end, I can only imagine (I like many here who have one or more systems crunching all the time) would certainly appreciate the ability to deduct some of the electricity as a charitable contribution. |

The reward is that you'll be getting relatively cheap drugs for the diseases being researched here and other networks, this means Humanity helping Humanity, is a long term benefit, if you want short term rewards: GO WORK HARDER. Or make a website with intersting thigs on it and get hundreds of thousands per moth.
To all the material crunchers: open your heart and give to people sick as other people would like to give you if you were on their shoes OR quit, stop asking rewards for something everyone with a computer should be doing and for something that is gonna go into your benefit ANYWAY. |

So how about it WCG can you get listed in IRS publication 78? While you are at it; see if WCG could be listed as qualified organizations in other countries so others can get the similar benefits? No. We are not a charitable organization. Volunteers participate in World Community Grid because they want to. Not because the get to shave a few pennies off of their tax payment. Try to visualizee how many extra people we would need on the support team in order to understand the taxes for each country of the world and then deal with all those tax agencies. |

Sorry I guess you misunderstood. There are NO tangible rewards for crunching. None. Zip. Nada. Zero. Squat. Zippo. Shoulda, woulda, coulda, mighta, wanta....................................... There are NO tangible rewards. Based on what I read in the forums, there is nobody with any authority in WCG that has even the slightest interest in changing that. You can post 1,000 requests in the fora, filled with hope and dreams (maybe with forceful demands for changes) and it is not going to change. Good Thing. Either volunteer or don't. It's a simple choice. |
