Discounting products can have the most awkward consequences... competition with the local IBM vendor would not be seen as taken in kind... and IBM is the only "business" relation, the WCG partners themselves just crunching volunteers, not business associates, and many times just educational institutions.

OK, only the IBM can give us discounts for buying some servers, PCs or IBM OSs...on which we can put BOINC fro crunching with WCG!

and the circle goes round & round & round... biggrin

IBM is already funding the entire cost of World Community Grid, which includes a number of full time people plus servers, etc. So asking IBM to pony up more money in the form of discounts is asking too much.

World Community Grid is strictly a "volunteer" effort and your reward is that you are helping others. Or you might be stricken by some disease some day and there might be a cure in place that your contribution to World Community Grid helped made possible.

Having said that, perhaps some other companies might be willing to give discounts. Especially those companies which are a little light on their social responsibility programs.

Thank you for raising the question!!! And Thank you for contributing!! applause applause applause

Re: Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

WCG is one of the very few things we can do that cannot provide us a tangible reward. To say: wouldn't it be nice..... is just wrong. It's petty. Part of what makes this organization what it is, is BECAUSE we do not get external gratification. We make a freewill choice without influence.

IBM does not deserve to be criticized FOR ANY REASON. The cost of the buildings, equipment, maintenance and operations is HUGE. Their investment is far greater than most any cruncher might be willing to invest.

If IBM wants to donate computers for crunching, they have offices all around the world that can be expended to do so. They do not need to be asked to give people free computers, so someone can do a bit of part-time crunching.

WCG is a gift we are giving to the world. Enjoy the gift of giving. For those few, stop trying to make it about you.

We have some IBM contractors at my office and they are all running WCG so apparently IBM is supporting this in every way possible with the exception of sending me a check for my crunch time (yes, that last bit about paying me was sarcasm) biggrin

Indeed they are...

I've just calculated some very rough stats, and according to the numbers of people aligned with a team with 'IBM' somewhere in it's name, there's well over 30,000 members (employees) - and that's not including those that are in different teams...

Um... not to throw cold water on your analysis... but just because there are individuals aligned with a group named "IBM" somewhere in the team name doesn't mean everyone in that group is aligned with IBM.

But then again WTF do I know? confused

SHHHHHH!!!!

Be very quiet about this or Obama will want to tax our donations! wink

TAX the donations? how? and why?
we only calculate, for getting discount in stores...and if you don't produce the money, and no money goes from corp. to the clients/users, then there would be no taxes!

and in Croatia, lots of people buy when things are on discounts! doesn't mater what, it might be some **** car, or some thing you use twice a year, but people would buy those things...
is Europe so much different from USA? last time I was in NY, it wasn't that much different!**edited for inappropriate language**tkh

Oh for goodness sake... can't you see humor when it's presented???

Re: Any rewards to the Grid members for their contribution ?

Hey BarneyBadass,

Just because I claimed that there were over 30,000 members aligned with a team with 'IBM' somewhere in it's name, no way implies that they're all active. In fact, I would be surprised to find a team where EVERY MEMBER was active (that is, except for the ones with very few members within them).

I'm sure that some of those members have left or have never worked for IBM - these were just very rough figures... All I was attempting to say, was that it 'appears' that IBM have a strong group of people who have gotten behind and are supporting the WCG.
