Question about computer fan and boinc

First off, I have tried running boinc, on my dad's computer, and they (Dad and his GF) didn't like it because the fans were running at full, and it was to noisy for them, I am wondering what is the best setting for the agent, so the fans won't fun as much or as loud?

And also, if I adjust the setting on one computer will the setting be overwritten when it contacts the servers, meaning what I have set under profile manager?

Sorry, most likely this topic has been discussed before, but I hate using the search option of any forum, never works for me, just list topics that don't even come close to what I am looking for

Re: Question about computer fan and boinc

Either in "Advanced->Preferences" of BoincMgr or in the host device profile (or in both, why not smile ), set "Use at most 50 % of processor time". This setting should bring back the noise to its usual level.

If this computer is more than a few months old that could also be worth to open it and check that there is not too much dust accumulated in vents or in the processor heatsink. Be careful when removing the dust, or ask for advice if you are not familiar with such cleaning.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Question about computer fan and boinc

if 50% is ok, you can try to set 55%, 60% etc until the fan will start being noisy

So, you may get more processing time

Re: Question about computer fan and boinc

hunterkasy,

Am using Speedfan free software for windows and have set it slightly higher than default so I can run a higher % of CPU time, yet have the ventilation run at a constant none disturbing level.

If you have different computers you can assign them to different device profiles which you can create and manage from the My Grid > Device Manager > Device profile.

It's crunching in fact that causes heat sinks to collect dust quicker... more ventilation sucks it in. Have to clean the laptop at least once a month to maintain optimum cooling. wink

Re: Question about computer fan and boinc

I do run speed fan on my cp, I use it to check out temps, but it does not detect fan sensors, and I also tried speed fan on that vista cp I was talking about on this thread and it don't detect anything,
