I currently run BOINC on 2 computers. I have a playstation 3 which I NEVER turn off. I have the game system running the client for folding@home. It completes work much faster that either computer. Due to my work/travel schedule I occasionally have to turn off both computers. I checked the folding site and realized immediately that playstation 3 systems are now their leading source for returned work units. Folding is a great project, which I participated in previously, but I am more committed to supporting WCG. Is there, or why is there not a WCG client for playstation 3s? Will there be one in the future?

Hello sgt209,
I have not heard of any proposed projects on the PlayStation 3. There is some PS3 work being done at Barcelona ( http://www.gpugrid.net/ ), so it is not just Stanford. Lawrence |

If you have some free time in the near future, surf over to the folding@home website and check some of the stats on PS3's returned work units. I would STRONGLY recommend to the board that a PS3 client be considered. I appreciate the quick response from a community adviser. Thank You! There's allot already been said about PS3 on these forums. WCG has elected to go for their first attempt to run on the NVidia cards and am sure they'll be looking at the lowest common denominator so the greatest number of volunteers that can run CUDA can be reached. When?... This year, we hope.
----------------------------------------Keep in mind it's not WCG making the sciences. WCG hosts. If there is no science proposed that's suited for porting to GPU, it won't be. And of course it must fit within the objectives... humanitarian and conservation, and results FREE access to everyone, and some wont do that (but they want to make free use of our grid anyway).

but they want to make free use of our grid anyway What do you mean? people want to use the grid for stuff that wont be shared? also, is there a linux distro for PS3? if so and the CPU is x86 or x64 you should be able to run the linux client of boinc... I dont know if the CPU's are x86/x64. can anyone find out? [Edit 2 times, last edit by Nick-MMX at Feb 4, 2009 9:46:38 AM] |

I can't say it any better. WCG signs contracts before hand to make sure and follows up results do go public and the final data product gets accessible to the (science) community.

Hello ksp209,
If you use Search, you will find that the grid staff were pursuing queries about the PS3 back in 2006. I have not heard of any project that wants to write a program for the PS3. Remember, almost none of our project scientists are Computer scientists. Their interests do not run to obscure CELL architectures. I am still waiting to hear descriptions of attempting to program for CUDA. I would have thought the PS3 was a more uniform architecture than CUDA, but there seems to be more activity with CUDA, so my opinions seem to be flat wrong. Lawrence |

I am still waiting to hear descriptions of attempting to program for CUDA. Easy enough to find ... just use Google. DDJ has been hyping CUDA for a while now. I would have thought the PS3 was a more uniform architecture than CUDA, .... Definitely. ...but there seems to be more activity with CUDA, so my opinions seem to be flat wrong. The average programmer is more likely to have a platform to develop and test CUDA applications, so there's a ease of access factor. Writing and testing applications for a PS3 that don't require Linux to be installed takes more effort. Most information about developing applications on a PS3 starts with installing Linux. See http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/power/libra...ACT=105AGX01&S_CMP=LP For example. - D |

Looks like the Sony PS4 will use Intel Larrabee: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/851/...el-design-playstation-gpu
