Re: Playstation 3's

Oh, for a crystal ball!

Will all this angst and hype over CUDA turn out to be for nothing? From the developer side, it has been problem after problem.

The message for BOINC is clear: multithread or die.

Re: Playstation 3's

I have read a lot of the advantages of the CUDA platform. Looks as though it could be the cat's meow or a flop, depending on how well developers support and code for it. I was hoping to run WCG on the PS3 without having to install a secondary OS on it. Thanks.

Re: Playstation 3's

YellowDog Linux is the best one out there or PS3, as far as linux distros go.
it's quite customized.

the problem is, running FAH (Folding At Home) or the BOINC WCG client on that is *incredibly* SLOW.

yeah, running folding under YellowDogLinux is orders of magnitude slower than running the specialized client.

running BOINC (tried it) is also slower than your average PC.
because it's not cel-processor aware, and only uses one processor, and each individual processor is actually quite low-speed in comparison.

the bottom line is, to get any real WCG performance out of it, a custom client will have to be created.

I'm sure WCG would "Evaluate" a client/system if someone were to write one for them and donate it. Theres probably lots of policies and requirements behind that...

Re: Playstation 3's

I have not heard of any proposed projects on the PlayStation 3. There is some PS3 work being done at Barcelona ( http://www.gpugrid.net/ ), so it is not just Stanford.

PS3 Grid/GPU Grid, SETI@home and yoyo has applications which uses the SPEs of the PS3 (full performance of the PS3). SIMAP and Einstein@home has a PPE only application, which uses the PPE of the PS3.

Re: Playstation 3's

I know it's not quite as powerful as the PS3, but what about XBox 360? It has by far more power than all but one of my computers. Is there a way to run linux on that to run WCG?

Xbox is slower that the newer PCs, and much more slower than the newer servers...but you can put Linux on it & start crunching!

on PS3 it's best to run f@h, which I also do (check the signature)!

on PCs there is much more room for the different projects & OSs...

Re: Playstation 3's

Well, it's my understanding that the 360 is running a tri core Xenon with 2 threads per core for a total of 6 cores (clocked at 3.2 Ghz), and incredibly high bandwidth(21.6 GB/s) which is by far better than any computer i have around my house...

And that link is for the original Xbox, anyone got one for the 360?

Here is the Xbox 360 article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360

It uses the PowerPC triple-core CPU.

Re: Playstation 3's

Hello Otis11,

Google xbox 360 linux install

But what project do you think WCG offers in Linux PPC? We only supported a few PPC projects on the Mac. You will have to search BOINC for Linux PPC projects - - WCG does not have any.
