Top 5 reasons and fixes for errors in your results (compiled from solutions found in this forum):
1. Your computer has had a hard shutdown or reboot and the workunit doesnt save its checkpoints, this results in files being missing or incomplete once the rest of the workunit is completed. 2. Your computer has had a hard shutdown or reboot and other nasty complications have been caused by it. 3. Your computer is overclocked. This causes lots of problems ranging from small computational errors to full on errors. Easiest thing to do is just not overclock your computer. If you have to overclock it, keep it as cool as possible. 4. Your stored benchmark could be wrong, you can run the benchmark a few times or stop boinc and delete both client_state.xml and client_state_prev.xml followed by a boinc restart. 5. This is your final option if all else fails. Resetting the project. Open the boinc manager and click on the Projects tab. Not click the "Reset project" button. Warning: This will reset all work currently downloaded so only use this as a last resort. Top 4 reasons and fixes for upload problems (compiled from solutions found all over these forums): 1. Your computer is acting up, try "turning it off and on again". This fixes a LOT of these problems. It also frees up memory and can speed up the crunching :D 2. Your router/cable modem is acting up. Restart it and your problems should be fixed. 3. Your computer is acting up in a funny way, try adding: 198.20.8.241 grid.worldcommunitygrid.org 198.20.8.246 www.worldcommunitygrid.org 198.20.8.246 secure.worldcommunitygrid.org to your hosts file: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc Its the files nammed "hosts" 4. Your computer is unable to get an ssl connection. Your computer may have a proxy or firewall which is blocking these connections. You can add a proxy server in the boinc manager. Advanced>Options>Http Proxy. Firewall related complications vary between different firewall software so I cannot supply the information related to fixing it. Top 5 ways to speed up boinc. 1. If your computer is set to not do work while in use and you have plenty of ram you can set boinc to not unload the workunits, this allows all work from the lase checkpoint to be kept until you are away from your computer again. Open the Boinc manager click on Advanced>Preferences>disk and memory usage. Now make sure the Leave applications in memorry while suspended is ticked. 2. Defragment your Disk. This doesnt have a large direct effect but over time it can make a small difference. Click on the start menu. now right click on my computer. click manage. now click on disk defragmenter. select the disk you wish to defragment and click defragment. Make sure your computer doesnt get turned off during the defragment otherwise data could be lost. 3. Remove unneeded services. generally you dont need to do this but if you are feeling upto it you can right click on my computer then click on manage and click on services and STOP any of the services you dont want running. a word of warning: Some services you disable might be needed by other programs so remember to make a windows restore point before fiddling with any of these settings. 4. This may sound like a bad idea but its really not if you take all the right precautions. If you have a dedicated windows box you can uninstall any antivirus software you have running to save cycles for the grid. Now there are a few things you must do first. to make sure nothing can go wrong you will need to disable windows file sharing. this means that other computers cannot copy data to your computer and your computer cannot access data from other computers. open control pannel and click on Network connections. now click on "set up a home or small office network". follow the prompts until you get to the file sharing screen. Once here turn file sharing off. Continue until your connection is set up. 5. Overclocking. This is not recomended because if you mess it up your computer may be ruined. You can Find DIY guides all over the internet so you should google the words "How to overclock". Speeding up boinc is really pointless because you get only a small benifeit for your effort. This is just an idea of the basics. It would be nice is the Community Advisor's made one with all the problems and solutions in the FAQ section.. yes Didactylos im talking to you ![]() |
