This one is, I believe, written in FORTRAN. I also believe the app has been around for some time, but (personal guess warning) I think is was normally run on specific, uniform hardware (ie. mainframes) that had a uniform node topology. WCG ... well ... doesn't. There are thousands of different variations of hardware and software configurations and usage patterns across the Grid which could lead to any number of weird conflicts.

Anything Fortran is likely to be much easier to implement under Linux. CHARMM has been on Unix/Linux machines for a very long time, but Windows only recently. If I were implementing something, I'd get it working on the easy platform first and on the buggy platform second once there was a stable system. That said, I quite understand that the priorities here may be towards the majority instead.
However, it would be nice if someone would say "no, we're not doing anything on the Linux version until Feb" (or Mar or Apr or whatever), rather than keep giving false hope and having us Linux users checking the forums every few days for the announcement that never comes. |

FEW days? I check daily both here and in the beta testing forum, just in case.

I add myself to the waiting list.
I'm deeply disappointed about not being able to contribute on this project since it's because of it that I joined WCG... Hope You'll realese 4 linux soon. still, great work guys, thanks. |

And so as usual Mac/Linux are the red haired stepchildren. ROTFLOL! Thanks for the chuckle! In any case, we've been hearing the "about a week or so" excuses since December. They are running a bit thin now. Honestly, having worked on many programming projects in the past, I don't think it's that difficult once an error has been discovered in the Windows code to fix the same mistakes in codes transported for Mac (Intel) and Linux platforms. It's really best that more systems be allowed to run up front to find all of the mistakes faster than keeping the numbers (and error reports) down... That's my philosophy on it anyways, since none of the systems targeted by this project are "critical" systems. These errors are then, unthreatening in nature, and the more of them that are reported, the faster they can be resolved... |

Hello !
----------------------------------------I can understand your growing frustration ! ... But you should not forget that you are supporting grid computing projects and WCG as well. I am only a "normal" cruncher (not involved in the administration nor being CA). Since two years (today), I am crunching with more or less success, experiencing from time to time some disturbances. But, if I look the global activities, the result is more than positive and encouraging. During the last time, we experienced some difficulties with new projects (see CEP) nonetheless the move of the computer center can be considered as a good success and the daily support is pretty OK ! I joined WCG for HCMD which ran only with UD. Later I supported other projects waiting since 18 months for HCMD phase 2. I enjoy to support available projects simply because it helps the community. Regarding your expectation for closer support of your specific host configuration, you should not forget that the size of WCG and the algorithm complexity make that each single implementation (project vs. host configuration) is really challenging in terms of tests, maintenance, and support. You should not forget that no software developer is perfect ! Some "simple" problems or bugs could be difficult to solve for different host configurations (I assume that we are not really close to Posix standards by scientific computation ? ....). Please, you should not become discouraged ! Support simply the projects which are available for your host configuration ! It will help anyway ! Cheers, Yves |
