Hi,
Any news on Mac/Linux compatibility? I'm still looking forward to the first Mac WUs. Thanks for the hard work! - Heady. |

I don't mean to be rude, but would like to say that I'm still keen for Linux work on this project. I've enabled beta testing on my three best and most monitored machines as well so that they can help the process along when the opportunity arises.

I am waiting for Linux work units too.

----------------------------------------"We are currently looking at the BETA results from the Linux and Mac platforms. This is going slower than usual due to the work needed to move World Community Grid to a new hosting environment. If the data from the BETA test look good, then we will release the Linux and Mac Intel versions to production." Unfortunately, there was no elaboration on the time-frame for this, but you'd have thought that either it was working and would go into production by now, or there would be some more Linux betas to iron out the bugs. There appears to have been neither. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 26, 2009 3:58:45 PM] |

Given that debugging on Windows continues and the repeated stop / starts, I'd very much doubt any work is done for other platforms until the program has most bugs fixed. The last scientist report in this forum said:
----------------------------------------Dear WCG Crunchers, We want to give everyone a quick update about the scientific status of the project. First, we want to apologize for the bad work units. While it is no excuse, the errors occur in only some of each randomized set and we somehow avoided them in our in-house testing. There are two main causes of the errors that we have seen: 1) If you have been following the progress of your work units on the graphs, you can see that the energy of the system fluctuates with each step. Sometimes, the position of atoms late in the run causes the energy of the system to change by more than is "reasonable" for the simulation and the work unit errors out. 2) The work units that error out faster are due to the random placement of the molecules causing a lot of atoms to be close to "edge" of the simulation, which causes an error when the energy of the system is evaluated. And now for the good news: both of these errors are more prevalent in certain types of simulations we are running, so we have removed these from the queue. We have also been learning from the results we have already gotten back. The next batch of work units we send will take everything we have learned so far into account. The CEP team is very thankful to everyone who has been crunching away. This is the biggest set of simulations we have ever had the chance to run and we are really excited about the future of the project! biggrin The CEP Team [Jan 24, 2009 11:10:20 PM]

And so as usual Mac/Linux are the red haired stepchildren.

According to boincstats, the contributions from Windows:Linux:OSX are roughly in the ratio 15:2:1. It's easy to see why the techs try to get the Windows version working first.
This doesn't make Linux and OSX any less important. It just dictates a few practicalities. |

... It's easy to see why the techs try to get the Windows version working first. ... Could be partly a self-fullfilling prophesy... Though clearly, windows still has the majority of the market share, so I don't blame the scientists for focusing their efforts there. I do wonder though why it's so hard to write cross-platform software. What language is the code in? Is it using lots of system calls to windows libraries or something? -Heady. |

Not hard to write, so much as time-consuming to test on each platform.
CHARMM is written in FORTRAN, so you can probably tell - this isn't your average porting problem. |
