sad Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

Hello,

I've installed the Boinc client with ease on my C2Duo laptop and it run very well on it. But when i tried the same on my Akoya Medion Mini 10'' (Atom XP SP3) notebook, things went wrong: it installed very easily, but the 2 tasks I'm performing are going very slowly (I know Atom is slow, but 24hours to complete the task ???) AND sometimes just go ... backwards. I reached 5% on a single task, just to see 30 minutes later that it was back at ... 0.4% ? crying

Why ? What's the problem ?

Thank you for your help !

Re: Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

Hello Alkazar,
Different projects have different average lengths of time to compute a work unit. NRW (Rice), for example, runs as many simulations as it can in 6 hours. It sends out as many work units as it needs to get everything simulated in 6 hour chunks.

Select Statistics - By Projects and then click on a project to see how long the average computer took to do a work unit yesterday. Then try just running the short projects and see how long they take.

You might want to try running just 1 project at a time to see if that speeds up your system or not. (Probably not.)

Re: Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

Thank you ! I'll try an shorter task next time, because my poor Atom will never be able to resume the task he's into tongue

But you didn't answered the "main" (or maybe you did, but I didn't catch it wink) : how can the calculation go backwards ? From 5% to 1 % for example ? Is it because of task itself (my tasks are: Help Conquer Cancer & FightAIDS@home) ?

Maybe I should give them up and try another...

Is that all of it? You just restarted. We'll let it run normally for a while, then post the messages again.

You should always expect to lose some progress when you restart BOINC.

Re: Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

FAAH WUs have one phase of their progress where they are "retrying" some calculation a variable number of times before going on straight to the end. This phase takes place usually between 0 and 10 %. During this phase you will see the percentage go back several tenths of a percent between the same limits, e.g. from 3.8 to 3.4 %, increment again up to 3.8 % etc... That can last several minutes and when the percentage passes the upper limit it's rolling to the end.

I hope it is what you have seen, although I have never seen such a large difference between the limits (you said 5 and 0.4 %).

Beside this particular problem I would advise you to choose the NRW project for a slow machine. The tasks of this project always use the same time (currently 6 hours), whatever the speed of the machine which runs them. Also they have rather frequent checkpoints (every few minutes) which allows you to switch your laptop whenever you need without worrying to lose much work when checkpoints are not taken very often.

Another project with frequent checkpoints is DDDT, but their duration might exceed that of NRW on your machine.

Another interest of these two projects is that they don't use much memory.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

So, my netbook worked many hours on WCG and here are the results. I took them times to times, each hours, approximmatly.

faah: 2.3% - 4.7% - 4.6% - 4.7% - 6.7% - 9.0% - 6.8% - 5.7% (1h47)
hcc1: 1.6% - 2% - 3.4% - 3.7% - 5.4% - 7.4% - 9.1% - 8.6% (4h02 --- ? They started at the same time...)

So as you can see, I've lost a lot of work. It seems that I loose a lot of work when I shut down (or deep sleep) my computer.

What do you think ?

Re: Problem with Atom N270/XP SP3 Notebook

Some tasks run better than others on lower powered machines, so follow Jean's advise and in case of piles of RAM switch on the "Leave application in Memory" and put the device in either sleep)hibernate) or standby. My laptop resumes then to the second when it left off.

As for Jean's observation of this docking optimization seen on some sciences, predominantly FAAH, that happens on any docking/folding attempt. If 10 are in a task, it happens 10 times usually. If 15 are in the task, 15 times. How long it takes the undulation of the % depends how quickly the logic determines there is no reasonable chance to find a lower best energy. That percentage retreats do not loose computing time. It's the system restarts that do when a full revert to the last checkpoint made. Those are only made at the completion of an attempt.

PS, picked up a 1gb RAM strip for a laptop before x-mas @ 15 Euro. The machine now feels much better with the max of 2gb now in it.
