I have a potential cruncher that tells me he hasn't run BOINC because it conflicts with a program called Webscheduler that he runs 24/7.
I've never heard of nor used that program but was wondering if anyone had or knows if perhaps that conflict has been dealt with? Any feedback appreciated. :) |

How does he know it conflicts? Or is he just afraid it might?

I asked for the person's input and the response was...
It's not really Boinc's fault, WebScheduler is a tv recording application that runs as a service on the computers. It's very possessive on what gets done when it is scheduled to make a capture. This is why in the evenings when it is at it's most busiest I finish with the computer for the day. I do not miss out on the tv series I am recording this way. When I was crunching Seti data a couple of years ago, it would lock up Amadeus solid because of the conflict. I thought with Ilyich (more grunt) the one year old computer I would not have this problem but it does. So no more crunching with Boinc. Waaaaaaaaah |

Has this person tried changing the advanced preferences in BOINC to not run while the computer is in use? Also there is an option to have the computer crunch only during certain hours. If the DVR feature is busy chugging away during the hours of say 5PM-10PM then have BOINC start up at 10:30PM and run while the computer is idle until 4:30PM the next day...
In the advanced menu on BOINC go to Advanced-->Preferences-->Processor Usage and uncheck the box that says "While Computer Is In Use". The boxes below this check box can be used to tell the hours when BOINC can run also. Hopefully that will help this machine to be joined back up and crunch on a limited basis. |

Lucky as the next BOINC version has an option to pause BOINC when particular programs are loaded.
----------------------------------------The option could have included CPU minimum load before pausing, but as it is, at least the gamers and image renderer or any other heavy app that gets effects is well served with the feature. Unload it and BOINC resumes. ttyl

I'm from a place that has many gamers where I find WCG a hard sell but this will surely help allay fears of performance loss for those enthusiasts. Shame it won't help with this particular person though as he said he runs that program 24/7. What's the projected release of that version Sekerob? |

It's in a release that not (yet) supported, 6.4.5
----------------------------------------The <options> control line to add to the cc_config.xml is <exclusive_app>important.exe</exclusive_app> Multiple important programs can be specified, but don't know what format that take... more line or space or comma separated. And as said, BOINC will not look for it if idle, just if loaded. Forget to unload, BOINC sleeps on. In the case of that Webserver program seemingly 24/7 loaded, it's not a solution.

Thank you for the info.
I shall look forward to seeing that version as will many others I'm sure. I hope they put some sort of emphasis on that feature when it gets released. |

I hope you are right, but I'm afraid this feature was written in reaction to other problems, rather than being designed as a value-added feature. As written, it has various technical limitations.
It fails to address the underlying problems. |
