Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

I would've thought the benchmarks for the i7 would have been higher sad
Still a nice rig though.
Be careful if you get 8 CEP jobs crunching at the same time when they open back up your PFs might go through the roof!

Don't know what's up with his machine (running other CPU-intensive tasks?), but I get 2580/8120 on my stock I7 920. This is on Vista 64 bits with 64-bits BOINC, I remember the scores being slightly (about 10%) lower when I had the 32 bits BOINC on it. Haven't run WCG on it thouh, so I don't know what the actual points earned would be per hour/day.

Increase the ram to reduce the PF's. The memory is very pricey. Getting ready to build an i7 system myself. Did you build your system or is it from Dell or other company?

applause Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

I'm running the 32 bit version. Tried the 64 bit version, saw no difference in tasks being processed faster and installed the old 32bit version back.

Maybe 32 or 64 bit version calculate the Benchmarks differently one from another. confused

*To those who're interested to know, average tast completion per day is 30 @ stock I7 920 speed (!)

*I tend to overclock it later, but will need to invest in Thermalright ultra 120 Extreme cooling first, since even at stock speeds, this I7 920 gets at 100% CPU load (WCG running) at 85 C with Intel stock cooler !
Getting it higher means simply burning it at 100C CPU limit

Guess I will finally break the 1000 barrier in a week after 3 years in WCG :)

Alex:
Just some info for you.
I have an i7-965 that I run at 3733mhz on air cooling(TRUE w/87CFM 120x38mm fan)
Get's over 26,000 a day in WCG doing the HCC program with HT enabled.
Runs at app 61-63C in a 72F room.
This is one of the first chips, what would be called a "high leakage" chip.
Better suited to phase cooling than air but this is what I got.
Very dependable machine and on the Intel board.
Your friend should be able to get close to 4000 on "good" air with that 920.
If he needs help tell him to do some reading over at the xtremesystems forum. Lots there on his combo.
Best of luck!

Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

I better start looking for a new system.

My poor P4 is sounding a bit dated.

LOL, don't feel too bad. My server that crunches 24/7/365 is a P4 HT 2.8GHz. It chugs along for what I need it to do (website, music storage, movie streaming to my XBoxes, etc.). I've been wanting to upgrade it to a Quad but feel I should put that money towards a house first. lol. I'd love to get an i7 but I don't see that in my future any time soon.

This I7 920 system is mine. the pictures are also mine biggrin

Any tips on what setting to change in ASUS P6T Deluxe's BIOS with pictures of the bios will be appreciated.

Do you know the power consumption of your system ?
I don't rich enough to pay for I7 overclocking lol :)

I have the Intel board not the asus. That's why I suggested visiting the Xs forum. Lots of discussion on your particular system there.
As to power consumption I haven't checked but my guess is in the +10% range as compared to a Yorkfield based system.
Now as to your old server, maybe think on a dual sossaman based system to replace it.
Stable, low power usage and can actually be run passive but a small fan on the cpu's is advised.
Boards can be bought for $30.00 and the two cpu's can be found for $60.00 a pair..Another $40.00 for memory and your in business.
Computational power is 80% of a stock Q6600 based machine.
Dependable, draws 117w at 100% load, quiet and the benefit of a server quality board.
The boards for these from Intel orginally sold for $430.00 but now available for $30.00
I have one that does the HCC project and has been up for months will out a boot or any issues.

back to the i7, here's the output from my i7 machine to give you some info on what to expect:

I'm sorry. I couldn't understand anything regarding the priocessor and the chart you added. Please use simple language. Prices are irrelevant as I'm from Israel, different currency and prices.

HMM, how to answer..
On the sossaman system; Think of it as two of the yonah laptop chips from 2006-2007 but on one top quality server board.
Chips are 31w, they made 2 versions, 1667mhz and 2000mhz
Was orginally designed to be in a 1U case in an unairconditioned room or building. They were eclipsed by the intro of the C2D's and essentially forgotten.
This machine does app 7000 PPD in WCG doing the HCC project.

As to the i7-965;
The numbers I posted essentially show that the i7-965 at 3733mhz essentially has app an 75% increase in output vs a Q6600 at the same speed.
26,500 per day vs 15,000..
