My new crunching BEAST: Intel Core I7 920 CPU 8 tasks simultaneously

My friend has a PC with Intel I7 965 CPU.
His BOINC client recognized the 8 virtual cores (The I7 series uses Hyper Threading to make 8 virtual cores out of 4 physical on muticore supporting programs like BOINC) inside his CPU and doing 8 tasks at a time.

I got I7 920 CPU 2 days ago, reinstalled the client (also deleted BOIN directory on C:\Program Files completeley just to be sure that no traces\configuration filesare left) and reinstalled BOINC 6.2.28 version.

Still, after 2 days I am getting only 4 tasks each time. Thought it should take complete a few tasks and the download 8, but it's still working on only 4 tasks :(

Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

In its message log, check which profile it is using (it's called "Computer location" in that log), then on the website update this profile, making sure that in the "Processor usage" section you have
On multiprocessors, at most use: 8 processors
On multiprocessors, use: 100 % of processors
and don't forget to save the result.

Then from the Advanced view of BoincMgr select the "Projects" tab, select WCG and click on the "Update" button.

Cheers. Jean.

sad Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

I tought of a creative idea, BIOS update. Flashed bio to newest one, and made "set BIOS defaults". thought maybe Hyperthreading was disabled or something, but it's ON.

other things I've checked:
- all 3 BOINC processes has the affinity set to all 8 cores (0-7 are marked)
- so does the 4 tasks of the processes.

It seems the program either misconfigured, either lack of support for 920 CPU (?)

Clearly, "something is wrong in this picture" confused

Anyway, here is my log. please notice the text I made BOLD

Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

Hi, Alex. You're overthinking this. The message log says it changed the number of available processors from 8 to 4 after reading your preferences from the website.

You need to adjust your preferences here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/devi...iguration.do?name=Default

Change both settings under "Processor Usage". Set the count to 8 or more and the % to 100. The minimum value is used.

Save the profile, then click "Update" in BOINC Manager to apply them.

Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

Couldn't find the COMPUTER LOCATION you directed me to:

OK. The equivalent in your log is this line
14/01/2009 07:28:04||Host location: none
which means that your are using your default profile.

Do what I have suggested on your Default profile. From your log I suspect that it is currently set to "max 4 processors".

There is really no problem using an i7 processor with Boinc and WCG. There are already many of them which are computing in HT mode, i.e. with 8 simultaneous tasks.

Cheers. Jean.

PS: Note that Boinc has correctly seen your 8 virtual cores.

Hi, Alex. You're overthinking this.

What can I say ? I'm A systems administrator. I first beat problems at hardware level(PC components), then after I made sure it's OK, I deal with the software level (Boinc, WCG) biggrin

Anyway, you were both right hugs , at the beginning I just didn't understand where to go . . . thinking

I made something to help you guys help others with the same issue next time(bookmark and direct here nex time) smile :

I would've thought the benchmarks for the i7 would have been higher sad
Still a nice rig though.
Be careful if you get 8 CEP jobs crunching at the same time when they open back up your PFs might go through the roof!

Re: Intel Core I7 920 CPU doing 4 instead of 8 tasks simultaneously :(

I would've thought the benchmarks for the i7 would have been higher sad
Still a nice rig though.

Don't know what's up with his machine (running other CPU-intensive tasks?), but I get 2580/8120 on my stock I7 920. This is on Vista 64 bits with 64-bits BOINC, I remember the scores being slightly (about 10%) lower when I had the 32 bits BOINC on it. Haven't run WCG on it thouh, so I don't know what the actual points earned would be per hour/day.

@ OP

My i7 is coming in around Monday or Tuesday of next week; on average, how many points per day is it generating at stock speeds?
