Now that we're done with our year's goal, I'm moving my quad back to QMC and PS3Grid exclusively. My laptop will stay at WCG. Hi Jonathan. QMC's servers are currently down. Apparently an unscheduled outage.I have 4 days of stored up work units. Thank God. |

Hey all. Am working on a final paper for my Introduction to Ministry Studies class and I wrote this for my introduction. This is what I have so far. I'm curious of whether or not you see the use of dialogue at the outset to be an interesting tool to spark interest, or just an awkward unacademic stylistic faux pas.
----------------------------------------When I announced to some friends at a Humanist group meeting that I was planning on writing my final paper on the most important part of my ministry, I was struck by their guesses as to what I would be writing about. One asked, “oh, is it about building community?” Another queried, “well then, is it about helping the ‘wounded?’” A third wondered, “is it getting us beer for our meetings?” “No,” I replied, “I’m writing about prophecy.” After this, things got awkwardly silent for a few minutes. A group member, Travis, asked me, “Wait, doesn’t prophecy mean predicting the future?” He, incidentally a PhD candidate at MIT, simply whipped out his iPhone and produced the following definition: “an inspired utterance of a prophet.” He then asked the inevitable question, “wait, you think you’re a prophet?” Sensing that my constituents were thinking me deranged, I attempted to clarify the situation. “Read another definition.” He answered, ‘“the function or vocation of a prophet ; specifically : the inspired declaration of divine will and purpose.’ Wow, are all these definitions self-referential like this? I mean, it seems to say, if you think you’re a prophet and you make predictions, then they are prophecies. Is there some process through which we can test who is and is not a prophet other than asking them if they’re a prophet? Maybe we could ask a prophet to predict…” Eager to defer this argument, I cut him off and asked him one last time, “One more try, just one more definition.” He read the third definition provided: ‘“a prediction of something to come.”’ “Exactly,” I replied. “That’s what I was looking for.” They were, unfortunately, unconvinced. “What the hell do you mean ‘a prediction of things to come?’ Can you predict the future?” I clearly had their attention, if not their confidence. I knew that by resurrecting (mind the pun) the notion of prophecy I could challenge their latent assumptions about traditional religious faith while I explained why I thought that “prophecy” is the right lens through which to understand my ministry. In this paper I hope to replicate this dialogue and explain why I think that Humanism must reclaim the notion of “prophecy” from conservative religious ideologues. In so doing, I will discuss “prophecy” from a Humanist standpoint. Finally, I will argue that the role of Humanism in modern America is as a “prophetic voice” to challenge the dogmas of conservative religion and proclaim a new and better vision for the future. Jonathan -- I think it is an interesting way to draw people into your topic and liked it. Of course I can't answer as to how well it will be received in the academic world, but I would expect it to fit well in a class on Ministry.

starting an academic, theological paper with a very unacademic dialogue can be a risky move as it might give the professor the idea that you are relying more on being flashy than factual. however, it is exactly the kind of opening that would draw someone who isn't stuck in their ivory tower. only you can judge whether your professor is one of those types.
----------------------------------------i would be interested in reading the full paper when you are done. it seems to me that there is more implied in the term prophecy than simply telling the future, however, i'm always ready to look at things differently. In Memory of Dave Bell |

on another subject, i think it would be good to set a team goal for the year this first week. nothing works like working together. i'm not real up on points, credits, or whatever its going to end up, but i believe in setting the target now and converting it later.
----------------------------------------i would propose a goal of 100,000,000 points for 2009. that is a very healthy jump of almost 25%. i thought about a lesser goal, but there is something special about that number. it will require an average of 274,000 a day, which is higher than we have been doing (without the special help from a few wayward travelers) but i believe it is a reasonable increase. what say you?
