Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

We'll see if it comes online tomorrow. My other PC will not attach to any project, despite everything I know being deleted/uninstalled and reinstalled.

I'll give it another day to see if this works. I got up to 4,000th in ranking, top 1%, shame to lose these two PCs but I have wasted a whole day trying to get this working.

If anyone has an idea why the one won't attach or how to get it to, let me know.

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

I notice you are using Windows Server 2008.

This is almost certainly the root of your problem. Is it configured as a domain controller? If so, it's guaranteed not to work. If not, then you still have a chance.

The rest of your interesting symptoms were caused by mess left over from previous installs. You say you have cleaned that out now, so all that remains is to get BOINC talking to the servers again.

My colleagues seem to have missed the fact that your deferral is caused by the client, not by the server. The very first server contact is failing (Fetching scheduler list) and communication is being deferred ready to try again. Normally it will back off a minute, try again, back off 2 minutes, repeat... (I forget the exact times).

So why is it failing? It is very possible that on Windows Server 2008, the boinc_master account has not received the network permissions it needs to contact the Internet. Alternately, there is a change the firewall is blocking it. Either way, I hope you know how to solve it, because I don't think this is one I could talk you through.

There is no need to wait for the timer. Time won't solve this one! Hit "retry communications" as often as you need.

Your other option is to downgrade to BOINC 5.10 again. That version doesn't use the boinc_master account.

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

yes i also agree you might want to downgrade BOINC on those computers...

as silly as that sounds it might work.. worse case you loose nothing from where you are now

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

Thanks for the reply, maybe I shold focus on one PC at a time as the symptoms are getting mixed a bit.

This PC I am focused on at the moment is running Vista x32. It is currently running ver 6, and has no project list to select from (and will not connect to WCG when I type URL in).

I am familiar with firewalls and accounts etc.; I changed both BOINC user accounts to machine admin status. The Windows firewall is not running; a firewall appliance is but always has. So does this unit have to go to ver 5 because of a firewall? What is the issue and I can re-configure the firewall? I am sure ver 6 works with firewalls given all the corporate computers out there...

thanks!

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

hope you manage to get new work soon

yes there are alot of things that can delay you geting work

but you can always hit the button and make it connect to the server... then click over to the messages and see if its showing why you are not getting work from client or whatever

good luck

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

Okay, awalt. Let's go to some advanced troubleshooting.

First, do you use a proxy? If so, follow the instructions here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=proxy

Even if you don't use a proxy, please will you follow the instructions for creating a cc_config.xml file, with the suggested logging flags.

Thank you.

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

OK, no proxy here, I created the following xx_xonfig.xml file:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<http_debug>1</http_debug>
<http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
<proxy_debug>1</proxy_debug>
</log_flags>
<options>
<force_auth>ntml</force_auth>
</options>
</cc_config>

And saved it to C:\Program Files\BOINC. Then I did Read config file.

Just for larks I tried attaching to WCG, no change. What do I do next to post the log data?

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

The log output goes to the Messages tab. Just copy and paste, as usual.

edit: it is likely you put the file in the wrong place.

12/14/2008 10:11:18 AM||Data directory: D:\BOINCData

And the default is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC

Check your message log again to get the right folder.

When I reinstalled I went with default directories.

Here is the log, it looks right to me. I tried another project reattach, and nothing appeared to be added to the log but i got the same failure msg.

Re: BOINC clients stopped reporting!

Did you move the cc_config.xml file to the correct place and reload it?

It should be in C:\ProgramData\BOINC not Program Files.
