It looks like they are sticking with the 97F/36C forecast.

Also, for those of you running FAAH, be sure to look at Long Running FightAIDS@Home Workunits if you haven't. The FAAH WUs in the batches listed will run long and may go past the original due date that you see in BOINC Manager but if you look at the WU in Results Status, you'll see the correct extended date. You do get an increased number of points in proportion to the extended run time needed so there's no real loss in running them. What I have observed, however, it that the longer run times will result in your To Completion times as estimated by BOINC being increased noticeably, perhaps significantly, which will in turn result in fewer WU's than typical sitting in your "queue" to run. The To Completion times should drop once these FAAH WUs are completed on your machines but that will take some time as additional WUs with the normal times get crunched and BOINC Manager reduces these times as a result. As long as WCG doesn't have an extended outage, you shouldn't notice any impact aside from a possibly slightly higher probability of a WU going into PV jail that normal.
----------------------------------------Edit: To clarify my last sentence, my observations of BOINC behavior is that if you run with a constant size "queue" and estimated run times are reasonably accurate, you'll get new WUs at a reasonably "regular" rate. So if you look at the times you receive each new WU, they won't be "clumped together". This relative smoothness bests minimizes the probablity of a given WU ending up in PV jail waiting on validation. It's when there's a change in one of those factors - your "queue size" (Additional work buffer), actual run times vs estimated and such that this changes. When WUs start taking longer that BOINC has been estimating and the initial To Completion times start rising, you'll get fewer WUs over a given period of time than before. If you start crunching on those WUs closer to the time you receive them as a result (they don't spend as long as usual sitting in your buffer waiting), you'll see an increased probability they will sit in Pending Validation that before, especially if they come in to you in clumps. When the estimated run times start dropping, you'll starting getting more WU's than usual in a given amount of time. Here, you could see the probability of a WU sitting in PV increase or decrease depending on whether they wait more or less time that usual for your machine to get to them. Most of your will read this and say "HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUH????" and, if so, don't worry about it. For those of you who "finesse" your crunching, it may prove interesting, possibly useful even, if it makes any sense! ![]() ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by keithhenry at Aug 5, 2008 4:06:38 PM] |

For those running (or have run) long running FAAH, you will now get credit if they errored due to running out of time. Have a look at this.

By the way, Keith, I remember your post a little while ago about being team captain and I just wanted to throw in my two cents and let you know that you do an admirable job as team captain. This team forum alone is a strong reason to consider joining the team (God knows it was the major factor behind my decision to join).
By the bye, has anyone else noticed that Crunchers Inc is considering disbanding? We should make an extra effort to be welcoming to any members that decide to leave. After all, we are the friendliest team on WCG! |

Is it time to take that hopped up mustang out of the stable yet Dataman? I'm about to put the Audi away for a long time (having a car in Boston is more useless than a Dodge Viper on a twisty racetrack). I'm joining zipcar instead since they pay for
1. insurance 2. gas 3. parking I will end up saving about $4000 a year minimum by switching to Zipcar, along with jettisoning all the worries about some little street punk taking a key to my immaculate paintwork since I have NY plates in Massachusetts! |

One more thing and then its haircut time:
This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. It is a survival guide... for when the zombies come. The author, Max Brooks, Mel Brooks's son, walks you through everything you need to know to fend off the inevitable zombie onslaught. http://www.amazon.com/Zombie-Survival-Guide-C...qid=1217958588&sr=8-1 Have a looksee. I can't put the darn thing down! |
