Too funny Dave. My weapon had a bit more range than his did. I couldn’t dig a hole this time of the year that would be big enough for me. It took a half hour to dig a hole big enough for him. The mattock bounces off this hard red clay like it was concrete. I was about ready to go borrow my neighbor’s backhoe. By the time I was done I had a turkey vulture circling. I should have just left it out in the corral and let him dine on it. ![]() Glad you didn't get it -- nasty stuff. You probably made that vulture unhappy. Once, while camping in The Great Smokie Mountains National Park, I was up after everyone else enjoying the last coals of the campfire when the skunks came out to check for food left out. I apparantly was between where one of them was and where he wanted to be and he walked right up to me, climbed over my legs and went on. You better believe I didn't move a muscle or breath through that. He got a couple campsites down and a dog decided to challange him. Glad it was the dog that got sprayed and not me, although it was still pretty bad from 50 or 60 feet. Hey, you going to Black Rock City this year? I wish I lived closer so I could go -- I think I would enjoy it from what I can see. There are certainly some creative folks there. |

No, I’m not going to Burning Man but I have a friend who is going with his son. I’m surprised they still have tickets as they limit attendance now as it is so popular. $295 apiece for tickets is a month’s crunching electricity. Skunks, squirrels, turkeys, deer and ‘possums are common here. There are a few raccoons (also a pain in the @$$). The dogs keep most of the wildlife at bay but skunks are stubborn and fearless. I guess if I was packing that kind of weapon I’d be fearless too. Females in the late fall are the worst when they look for some place to nest in the winter (like my barn). They’ll fire on you without warning. The rest of the time they will warn you by pounding their front paws on the ground before whirling around and firing. Over the years I’ve had to wash numerous dogs with tomato juice to get rid of the smell, now I just go get a rifle. The turkey vultures always amaze me how fast they can find carrion. I’ve had squirrels that have been hit on the road gone in two hours; long before there is a foul smell. They will pick a deer clean in two days. Once one comes down, the others follow. A couple of weeks ago they issued our usual mountain lion alert. Because of the numerous fires and dry conditions there have been several sighting around here. They come down from the high country this time of year looking for water and the occasional poodle to snack on. ![]() ![]() |

I guess I forgot to tell you guys a little more about me. Someone earlier today asked what type of medicine I practice.. I'm a Pediatrics Resident. In other words, i'm doing the final "on the job training" and will be practicing medicine with only children. We "old people" are evil! lol.. And to top it off, i'm trying to specialize. I have applied for a fellowship (additional training) in Child Abuse Medicine. That's my number one passion.I got started crunching back in the UD days.. came here for a short time, then "lost sight". Someone helped me find the way, just not sure yet who that is. lol. I crunch mostly because i hope it helps somehow.. I just wish I had more computing power to help. In time I guess. I see kids of all ages dying from Cancer fairly often. Had a patient of mine last month die from a chest mass, most likely a lymphoma. And he was 17. Nice young man too. I crunch hoping someone out there will find better therapies, etc. :) I'm not special, i'm not any better than anyone else. I am blessed with the ability to go to work and enjoy my job on a daily basis. And I get to make a difference some days. I sometimes even have "FUN" at "WORK". (Please don't tell my supervisor.. lol)Hope everyone has a great week.. :) Dr. Mike.. Thanks for your help and crunching with us! |

Plenty of deer (mule and white tail), rabbit (I think one has recently found a home somewhere in my yard), turkey (we've had a brood of about 20-25 ambling through the front yard a few times), at times hordes of ladybugs, snakes (alledgedly, I've only see one small one sunning out in the road in the years we've been here), squirrel and possum (the latter usually as roadkill). So far, no bears, no coyotes. Ten miles down the road is plenty of civilization. Nice mix. Gerald, back in Texas, I had a boss at one job who actually admitted to seeing a skunk on campus back in his college days. For who knows what reason, he presumed it to be a tame one. It wasn't. He ended up tossing his jeans out the dorm window to get rid of them. The next morning, he found them burned where they had landed. Guys like him seemed to perpetuate certain stereotypes - he was an Aggie. |

...The mattock bounces off this hard red clay like it was concrete.... Sounds just like the red clay we have here. Allegedly, it's a kind of dirt. |

but trust me the tomato juice does not work on stupid 16year olds I know from personal experience it takes about 5-6 liters of tomato juice to do a Great Dane. Then you have a dog that smells like skunky pasta sauce. ![]() ![]() |

In the summer you can't drive a shovel in it and in the winter, when it is full of water, you can't pick up a shovel full of it. ![]() |
