BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

I apologize if this is a duplicate suggestion but, since I didn't see it, I wanted to post it. I'm running Vista Ultimate with UAC enabled. Currently, when BOIC runs it has to be granted permission to execute because something it's doing requires it to have administrative privileges - this is poor design; the Stanford University FAH app doesn't need it. This is a pain in the neck because every time the computer is rebooted, the app is blocked from starting and you have to manually click on the blocked programs and tell Vista that it's okay to start. And no, I'm not going to disable UAC - BOINC should be changed to not require admin privileges - again, FAH requires no such privileges. I guess there's not a lot of Vista users using BOINC or they'd be more people asking for this. It should be addressed now, while the Vista user base is small, before it effects more people and becomes more of an issue.

Thanks

Yes, this is a known problem - one that should be fixed in the next BOINC version.

Re: BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

I have BOINC 5.10.45 installed as a service to C:\ProgramData\BOINC and have disabled nothing, no UAC, no Windows Defender. The BOINCmgr at that time does not need to be auto-started to fire up the client and science and can be launched manually and exited without effecting the service. Service is in fact the sole way to install with the next version.

[Edit: Need to correct that, as i found after trial and error with the alpha 6.2.6 test client: It's the default way of installing for BOINC 6 [on windows] There is an advanced option in the installer that allows to un-tick the 'protected' install option, which than will install the client as normal, being started by the BOINCmgr.]

How do you install it as a service? I didn't know you could. So, if it's installed as a service, you can still manage it (snooze, etc.) through the BOINC GUI?

Any word on when the next version is due out? I'd be willing to be a beta tester as I'm running the client on 3-PCs...

Re: BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

Just run the installer again it will offer either a screen with the single/shared/service options or a repair/remove. Run the remove if it does and reinstall. The work will remain unaffected and will be picked up where you left when you completed the service install.

As said the BOINCmgr can still be started and exited. It has all the control features.

Next version.... hmmm. The latest alpha has been up for a few weeks now and is far from perfect. Mid-Late Q3 optimistically. WCG always waits with their adoption until it's proven stable in production, speak those that cant wait and pick up the often in past prematurely offered 'Recommended' at Berkeley.

The current schedule is still to release BOINC 6.2 on the 16th of June.

Re: BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

I have two computers of which one is running vista and the other is running xp. I just looked at the vista one and discovered no results were returned for the last 2 days(it is a quad) so their should have been 20 or more. The xp has more than 20 results for the same time. I looked at the boinc home page and they are still at version 5.10.45 which I have. I went to the boinc forum and they seem to think that the problem is with wcg as they have other projects running under boinc without any problems. Vista has been out now for over a year so it hard to believe this problem is just now being discovered.

Re: BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

No idea what you saw on the Berkeley fora RtB. Link please. The version 5.10.45 works picture perfect for all the WCG sciences on XP and Vista and optimal if installed as service. With a Vista feature not used by the BOINC installation but manually configurable is, that you can even tell for the BOINC service to start with a delay to speed up booting and user access . We got a long FAQ in the Start Here going back from shortly after Vista was launched with the workarounds, do's and dont's, tips and tricks.

Now on 6.2, forget it for a wee bit. The date was postponed and since latest 6.2 public test version eats RICE cookies on XP and Vista for a variety of reasons (at least here), not sure when it will come out. Not waiting for it. The big change is a claimed halving of the graphics related crashes and as user the option to be able to select multiple lines of tasks and do an action on them with one button push like suspend or abort.

Re: BOINC should not have to be run with administrative privileges in Vista

I just rebooted the computer and their is a icon that states that windows has blocked some startup programs from running. It gives me the option to show or remove blocked startup programs but when I choose this option all of my startup programs are listed. I thought all of them would be running than but Boinc is not even though it has a check mark just like the rest of them. There is another option to run blocked programs and when it is selected boinc manager starts up. I than rebooted and again windows come up with this icon stating some programs have been blocked. So it looks like for now I have to manually start the boinc manager every time I reboot. I hated when xp first started and I had to relearn everything I knew about windows me and now I have to relearn it again since vista is very different from xp.
