Harnessing Idle School PCs?

Hi, I'm a high school student who runs WCG at home and I realized that the collective processing power of my school's computer labs could be a great asset to these projects. I haven't mentioned it yet but I'm sure the faculty would be happy to accommodate the grid.

I don't know if having WCG running in the background constantly is a good idea as some classes deal with very CPU intensive software. However, if we could have the default screensaver/standby mode to run WCG 100%, that would be a great compromise. In particular, I'm using the BOINC client on Discovering Dengue Drugs, the project graphics window would be a great screen saver as it would give students a visual sense of what's happening and I personally find the student writings from Lanier Middle School inspiring- and our biology teachers would be overjoyed by the sight of protein foldings. Is this already being done and/or could be easily implemented?

Also, and I may be getting ahead of myself here, if this could be done on a large scale then competition between school teams using client points could be used as incentives for school rewards, maybe even a scholarship or bursary. Excuse me if I'm out line suggesting this but I couldn't find whether or not WCG was non-profit or otherwise how financially feasible this would be. It's just that government funding for education isn't great and while school faculty may be all too glad to help out, I find they're sometimes too kind for their own good.

As a typical procrastinating student, I managed to come up with this near the end of the school year and I know our staff typically does computer reimaging/maintenance in the summer so a quick response would appreciated. Thanks for reading!

(Mods- apologies if this is in the wrong section, please move if so.)

Hi Bovine.Baron,
some answers to some of your questions below.....
However, if we could have the default screensaver/standby mode to run WCG 100%, that would be a great compromise.

Yep - BOINC supports this right out of the box. You can set the BOINC preferences to kick in qhen the system has been idle for a specified amount of time. You can also throttle the resource usage (CPU/RAM/network I/O etc). Also - if your systems would be idle (e.g. if they're running simulations without much user interaction) but you want 100% CPU availability for the 'other' work - you can tell BOINC to run between specified times (e.g. at night). Dunno about the graphics question you raised tho - this is something for the WCG tech staff to answer...
Excuse me if I'm out line suggesting this but I couldn't find whether or not WCG was non-profit or otherwise how financially feasible this would be.

WCG is strictly non-profit, so I don't think a bonus scheme would be in order.

Since you'll be the responsible party for introducing WCG into your school, don't forget you'll probably get a bit more work on your plate because of this....

Hopefully you'll still consider putting the machines to work !

Cheers,
Sean

Re: Harnessing Idle School PCs?

Hi,

Many schools/colleges have joined the WCG partner program which opens access to customized roll-out support and sub-team type set-ups within a single member registration like Clemson University School of Computing that just joined. This way you can have an in-house competition over and above participation on overall team competitions at WCG as well as the challenges .

Yes, WCG has a screensaver for every science thus also for the Human Proteome Folding phase 2.

No, WCG is sponsored by IBM investing millions annually to be a free host to scientists who have viable griddifiable projects of pure non-profit and humanitarian nature. The contributions in form of computation effort is also for free from US, the members. Scholarship sponsorships and the like are not on the offering within this Distributed Computing effort.

The client can be set in many ways even for those that are reimaged on a daily basis or so that the client goes to sleep when the computer is not used in a socalled Power Saving setup.

With IBM behind this non-profit project, security is of the highest order unsurpassed by any other volunteer computing program available on BOINC. Thus, partaking here is save as houses (think that is these days an inflated statement in places)

cheers
