Thread: Upgrading from AthlonXP to Core Duo, should I run work dry first |

I will be upgrading from an AthlonXP based system to an Intel Core Duo based system, should I run workunits dry first? I will be transplanting the HDD with Slackware Linux 12.0 from my old system to the new one. Obviously I will need to rerun benchmarks first thing after getting Slackware up and running again, but would switching CPU's in the middle of a workunit cause it to abort?

It's probably better to say "no new tasks" and run it dry, in case something strange happens.
----------------------------------------You say that you are cannibalizing the old system and swapping the HD? If it's windows to windows, it might just pick up where it left off. Then again, the registry might get confused. If it's exactly same OS on the HD there might not be a problem at all. If it gets messed up, it might take a reinstall. That's why I'd clean out the queue first. In the case of a reinstall, tell it you are already a member. You'll end up with another device number, but you can't help that. If you change platforms from Windows to Linux, it could DEFINITELY get weird. In that case, it would probably want to be reinstalled as a new device. For want of a HD, you could run two computers. I have one X2 and 3 regular AMDs here.

The jobs are not interchangeable between operating systems simply because the exe for windows wont run on Linux but also because WCG uses Homogeneous Redundancy for all present projects except HPF2 (soon also DDDT & FAAH will have zero redundancy). The results from Windows are slightly different from Linux or Mac and thus would not compare. WCG keeps track to which platform a task was sent.
----------------------------------------CPU change on the same client has resulted in some confusion on the historic record. It takes time before the sliding average claim value has been fully adjusted. This issue has been reported.

Thanks for the advice. That's interesting about the sliding averages.
like I said I will be going from Linux to Linux. I am just transferring the HDD as I have my system set up nicely, and don't feel like spending days reinstalling all the stuff I have on my system that isn't part of a standard Slackware installation. Not a case of lack of HDD's. It won't be a hassle running dry as I keep a very small queue anyway, just a day. The old machine will become the general family computer (running Slackware as well). I may continue runnning WCG on it, we'll see. |
